DEP PROVIDES $250,000 TO CLEARWATER
FOR WASTEWATER PROJECT

~Funding will help expand sanitary sewer service in Pinellas County~

TALLAHASSEE – A $250,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will help the city of Clearwater expand its sanitary sewer system to help protect local waterbodies.

The project calls for the installation of approximately 5,800 linear feet of gravity sanitary sewer systems, which includes connections to existing collection systems, manholes, laterals and cleanouts for as many as 80 properties in three neighborhoods. The connection to the sanitary sewer system will reduce the amount of excess nutrients discharged in local surface waters by routing wastewater into existing Water Reclamation Facilities.

“DEP supports Clearwater’s efforts to reduce the amount of excess nutrients that may impact local surface waters,” DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. said. “It’s important for the state to work with local governments to better protect Florida’s environment.”

“I am pleased to hear that the city of Clearwater will soon begin the expansion of sewer services to neighborhoods in my Senate district which will be partially funded by an appropriation from the Florida Legislature,” Sen. Jack Latvala said. “Eliminating aging septic systems is good for the environment and improves property values.”

Work on the project will take place in three neighborhoods: Along County Road 193 in the Alligator Creek watershed, in Grove Circle in the Stevenson Creek watershed and in the Belcher Area in the Allen’s Creek watershed.

The project is expected to be completed in 2016. DEP’s funding is being supplemented with $1.55 million in local funds from wastewater revenues to complete the project.

Clearwater is located in Pinellas County.
