ROOKERY BAY RESERVE HOSTS GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM SYMPOSIUM
~More than 100 professionals learn innovative techniques for GIS applications~
NAPLES – Each year, the Geographic Information System Symposium at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve draws hundreds of professionals from across the state. Today, more than 100 participants attended in the Fourth Annual GIS Symposium at the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center. This daylong event has grown over the years to become one of the top GIS events in southwest Florida.
GIS technology uses computer software and other tools to map, model, track and manage data relating to spatial features of land or water. This technology can provide benefits to all aspects of the community from retail businesses to municipal utilities to natural-resource managers. Rookery Bay Reserve’s event engaged professionals from city, county and state governments as well as universities and the private sector.
Through exhibits and featured presentations from GIS professionals and industry leaders such as Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and Trimble representatives, attendees learned about new projects, applications, and data-access opportunities; became exposed to innovative techniques; and networked with other GIS users from a variety of industries and agencies.
Exhibitors provided hands-on opportunities for participants to try out new tools including field equipment and top-of-the-line large-format map printers.
The event concluded with a poster session and social hour, with support from the Friends of Rookery Bay. Event supporters also included Accela, NEI, Stantec, Mongovan Mapping and GIS Services, GPServe, Canon, Costco, Binary Structures, AVI-SPL and Greenlinks at Lely Resort.
Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve protects 110,000 acres of coastal lands and waters managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in cooperation with NOAA.
