DEP PROVIDES $300,000 TO MIAMI LAKES
FOR STORMWATER-DRAINAGE PROJECT

~Funding will help protect Bisayne Bay from excess nutrients~

TALLAHASSEE – A $300,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection allows the town of Miami Lakes to help pay for a stormwater project that will help ease drainage issues in Miami-Dade County.

The funding, which is being matched with $300,000 from Miami Lakes, will pay for the construction of an exfiltration trench along the length of Northwest 89th Avenue in the West Lakes neighborhood. That trench will help eliminate the unwanted introduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, suspended solids and bacteria into local waterbodies.

“DEP supports the town of Miami Lakes’ efforts to properly address stormwater runoff before it enters into area waterbodies – including Biscayne Bay,” DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. said. “This is yet another example of a project that makes sense for Florida’s environment.”

The West Lakes Drainage Improvements Project will be publicly advertised to select a contractor. Construction on the project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
