DEP PROVIDES $400,000 TO MIAMI BEACH FOR WASTEWATER PROJECT
~Funding will help protect Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and area beaches~
TALLAHASSEE – The city of Miami Beach secured $400,000 from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to help pay for a wastewater project for area residents. The money will be used for a project to help repair a distressed sanitary sewer waste line that services the Flamingo Park neighborhood.
The project calls for the installation of a separate 54-inch diameter main that will carry 22 million gallons per day of sanitary sewer waste to the Miami-Dade County Water and Wastewater Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant. By safely routing that sanitary waste, the city is providing a safeguard from potential nutrient loading from the domestic wastewater into neighboring waterbodies such as the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and area beaches.
“Protecting Florida’s water is one of DEP’s top priorities, and this is a project that will reduce the impact of excess nutrients into Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve as well as the beaches in Miami Beach,” DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. said. “This is yet another positive step forward in improving the quality and quantity of water in Florida.”
The location for this project is at the intersection of Commerce Street and Washington Avenue in Miami-Dade County.
