DEP PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TOWARD PALM
COAST WATER TREATMENT PLANT CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
~Grant supports alternative water source project~
TALLAHASSEE – The
Florida Department of Environmental Protection is awarding the city of Palm
Coast a grant of $375,000 for water treatment process equipment as part of the
city’s ongoing multi-million dollar, five-year capital improvement program. The
equipment is manufactured in Brevard County; therefore, this investment remains
in Florida.
“Protecting and
improving Florida’s water quality and quantity is one of my top priorities,”
said DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. “This project will improve the water
quality and also allow for significant amount of water to be recovered daily as
an alternative water source.”
“The city and the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection have provided joint funding for
this excellent example of development of an alternative water source project,”
said Palm Coast City Manager Jim Landon. “We appreciate the state of Florida’s
support for this important water treatment project.”
Currently, the city is
unable to meet discharge limits for iron in its current permit. This investment
will help Palm Coast achieve regulatory compliance with the department’s water
quality standards. The installation of a filtration system with the adjustment
of the pH will help reduce the amount of iron to regulatory limits. The
oxidization system will allow for 750,000 gallons per day of water to be
recovered as alternative source water and ensures that the finished water
supply meets DEP color compliance.
This project is part of
a $62-million capital improvement program passed through resolution by the city
in 2013. The five-year plan includes a variety of projects that renew or
replace existing aging infrastructure, upgrade treatment processes to meet new
regulations or accommodate growth as the economy returns to normal. The
financial assistance provided by the DEP will help to reduce this burden to its
rate payers.
