TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection Secretary Jon Steverson presented Skanska USA Civil
Southeast Inc. with a Recycling Recognition Award to honor the company for an
outstanding 98.7 percent recycling rate on two construction projects. Secretary
Steverson presented the award to Skanska at the Florida Capitol as part of the
Florida Recycles Day celebration.
“I applaud Skanska for its outstanding recycling efforts,” said Secretary Steverson. “Recycling
redirects waste from Florida’s landfills and stimulates
growth in Florida’s economy by creating local, well-paying jobs.”
Skanska USA, one of the largest construction and development companies in the
United States, attained an exceptional 98.7 percent recycling rate while improving a
3.4-mile section of US 331 over the Choctawhatchee Bay in Walton County. In
addition to recycling nearly 35,000 tons of construction and demolition debris,
the project team also reused excess embankment material, recycled asphalt, and
procured steel and plastic marine lumber made with a high percentage of
recycled content. The company
also achieved a 98.7 percent recycling rate during reconstruction
of a 4.1-mile stretch of I-275 in downtown Tampa. The project team recycled
more than 10 tons of typical office materials and more than 96,000 tons of
construction material. For decades, Skanska has been a pioneer in developing environmentally
responsible, innovative green projects.
“We are
committed to identifying sustainable solutions that help protect our
environment and improve the communities where we build for generations to
come,” said James Goyer, vice president of Florida Operations at Skanska USA
Civil Southeast Inc. “For our Florida team to receive this award from the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection is truly an honor.”
Skanska USA is one of 35 organizations to be awarded a recycling recognition
award. The department has an easy tool for companies to track their
recycling efforts – the Florida DEP Business Recycling
Tracking Tool.
Through the website, companies can track various recycling efforts
and produce reports on how those efforts are helping to shrink their carbon
footprint. For more information about Florida's recycling efforts, click here.
