TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In celebration of Florida
Greenways and Trails Month, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
invites Florida residents and visitors to explore the more than 8,000
miles of land-based trails and 4,000 miles of paddling trails found throughout the Sunshine State.
“Greenways and Trails Month is the perfect opportunity for explorers of all ages to discover the hidden gems of Florida,” said Florida
Park Service Director Donald Forgione. “Whether you prefer hiking, biking or paddling your way through the parks and trails, the natural beauty you’ll find on
our award-winning trails is truly like no other.”
October is brimming with statewide recreational activities
appealing to the varied interests of Florida’s residents and visitors. Accompany
park rangers on a bird walk through Ravine Gardens State Park and learn how to
identify commonly found birds by sight and sound. For those interested in
biking, journey down the Withlacoochee State Trail, a 46-mile stretch of
converted railroad track, during the 21st Annual Rails to Trails
Bike Ride. Explore the Suwannee River via kayak or canoe at the 13th
Annual Florida Paddler’s Rendezvous, where guests are invited to camp for the weekend and enjoy Florida’s
natural beauty.
Various trail-related events are being offered at Florida state
parks throughout the month, including a haunted moonlight hike and a fall
wildflowers and butterflies walk. To find an extended list of activities
