OAA Hosts African Business Mixer 2015
On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, the Mayor's Office on African Affairs hosted its African Business Mixer at Etété Restaurant in the historical Shaw neighborhood. Director Mamadou Samba welcomed guests and invited speakers Fred Moosally, Director, Alcoholic Beverage
Regulation Administration (ABRA), William Hager, Public Information Officer, ABRA, and Ted Archer, Chief of Staff, Department of Small
and Local Business Development (DSLBD).
The speakers emphasized the commitment of DC Government to attract and sustain new businesses and innovative ideas, and provided useful information on available resources and current regulations. Prominent business owner Henok Tesfaye encouraged African businesses to work together to create a unified effort and contribute to the District's thriving economy. Over fifty business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs attended the event.

OAA's Grant Writing Workshop
As part of its Capacity Building Development Program, the
Mayor’s Office on African Affairs is hosting a two-day grant workshop to
support the growth and institutional development of community- and faith- based
organizations. The two-day Grant Writing Workshop is designed to assist in how
to identify funding sources and strengthen organizational skills on critically
analyzing internal and external factors, conducting program development,
creating program budgets, and engaging in proposal writing. The Workshop will
use common grant development formats and provide the basics on grant
development, including: how to identify and evaluate the most appropriate
funding sources, how to research a problem, and how to supply the documentation
and statistics necessary for supporting a grant proposal.

Executive Actions on Immigration: OAA's Informational Sessions
The Commission on African Affairs (COAA) and the Office on African Affairs (OAA) are teaming up with the US Department of
Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to conduct two information sessions on President Obama's Executive Actions on Immigration. The Renaissance Center and DSK Mariam Ethiopian Orthodox Church will partner with COAA and OAA to host these workshops for French- and Amharic-speaking constituents, respectively. Licensed attorneys and immigration professionals will provide basic information on who would be eligible to apply, what to expect during and
after the application process, and how to identify quality legal service
providers to assist in the application process.

Mayor Bowser Celebrates Earth Day by Hosting First-Ever 'Path to Zero Waste' Summit

– On Earth Day, Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of the Environment (DDOE) Director Tommy Wells hosted the first-ever “Path to Zero Waste” Summit in an effort to reduce waste in the District of Columbia. The summit is part of Mayor Bowser’s bold agenda to move the city towards zero waste, save residents money and create more pathways to the middle class.
“There’s no better time than Earth Day to announce my administration’s pledge to move the District towards a zero waste future,” said Mayor Bowser. “We are making a fresh start on waste policy and Earth Day 2015 will mark the first day of a newfound commitment to changing the dialogue about how we reduce waste, save money and create jobs in DC.”

Mayor Bowser Joins Groundbreaking for 140 Affordable Apartments in Brightwood Neighborhood
(Washington, DC) – Wednesday, April 22, 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined District residents and
developers for the groundbreaking of the Brightwood Portfolio, a plan to create
and preserve 140 affordable apartments for families across three historic
buildings in Ward 4’s Brightwood neighborhood.
“The Brightwood Portfolio plays a critical role in how we address affordable
housing in the District,” said Mayor Bowser. “This development furthers my goal
of increasing quality affordable housing opportunities for more residents and
maintaining economic diversity throughout the District – all in an effort to
build more pathways to the middle class.”

Mayor Bowser, Incoming FEMS Chief Launch New Recruitment Effort; Deploy New
Ladder Truck
Friday, April 17, 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Interim DC Fire Emergency Medical Services
(DCFEMS) Chief Gregory Dean announced a new effort to recruit firefighter EMTs.
For the first time in eight years, DCFEMS will administer an entry-level exam to
develop a pool of potential recruits to join the Department. Mayor Bowser and
Chief Dean also announced that a new ladder truck – Truck 5 – will be
permanently stationed out of Engine 29 in Palisades.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of District residents and visitors is my
top priority,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We need to ensure that our first
responders have the training and equipment they need to serve the District. This
recruitment drive is a unique opportunity for District residents to start a
career in public service while getting a job that will put them on a pathway to
the middle class.”

Africa: Honoring Africa in Washington DC
AllAfrica Global Media marked its 15-year anniversary with the launch of the AllAfrica Awards on Friday April 17th, 2015 in Washington DC. The work of three leading African figures will be recognized: H.E Macky Sall, president of Senegal; Dr. Donald Kaberuka, president of the African Development Bank; and Maria Kiwanuaka, former minister of finance, planning and economic development and senior advisor to the president of Uganda. The three, selected by Africans and friends of Africa, represent leadership in strategic planning for economic development; for mobilizing development financing; and for championing inclusive economic growth, peace and security. The awards presentation will be preceded by an interactive discussion on the theme: 'Reimagining Africa: Giving Birth to the Africa We Want'.

FY 2015 Sports United: International Sports Programming Initiative
The Department of State announces funds to support exchange projects designed to reach undeserved youth and/or their coaches/sports administrators who manage youth sports programs. These exchanges between the United States and select countries will be either reciprocal or one-way, and will employ sports to address specific themes outlined below. 2015-2016 AmeriCorps State Formula Grant Competition (SDC)
Serve DC announces the availability of AmeriCorps State Formula funding for Fiscal Year 2015-2016. Concept papers are required and must meet an identifiable community need, the capacity of the applicant to effectively administer an AmeriCorps program, including adherence to programmatic and fiscal requirements. Call for Graffiti & Aerosol Mural Artists - 2015 MuralsDC Program
The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) in
collaboration with the DC Department of Public Works (DPW) seeks graffiti
artists and artist teams to design, create and install aerosol murals that
inspire the various communities in which they will be placed. Selected artists
will be required to work with the young apprentices (ages 14-23) by introducing
and refining each student's artistic skill in the discipline of graffiti style
sketch work and aerosol mural painting.

The Ethiopian Community Development Council's (ECDC) annual national conference provides a singularly unique forum that looks at

for refugee and immigrant needs locally and globally. These efforts are
