Washingtonians,

Tomorrow is Emancipation Day - the 153rd anniversary of freedom for more than 3,000 men, women and children in the District of Columbia, roughly eight months before President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863.

 

Every year, on April 16th we gather to celebrate Emancipation Day, celebrate what we have accomplished and remember that we have a lot of work to do as we continue our fight for statehood and equal rights. 


This year, I hope you will celebrate Emancipation Day by attending one or more of our marquee events:

Emancipation Day Parade: Join thousands of attendees at Freedom Plaza for the Parade on Pennsylvania, featuring U.S. Armed Forces bands and units, DC neighborhood groups and organizations, grand historic balloons and more.
Date and Time: Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 11am to 1pm
 Location: From 4th St, NW and Pennsylvania Ave, NW to Freedom Plaza

Truck Touch: DC government agencies will demonstrate and explain the vehicles used to fight fires, rescue residents, repair roads, construct buildings and more!
Date and Time: Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 12pm to 3pm
Location: 14th St, NW and Pennsylvania Ave, NW

Emancipation Day Concert: Be sure to catch the official Emancipation Day concert! Featured performers include Eric Benet, Maysa, Raheem DeVaughn, Doug E. Fresh, Mali Music, Familiar Faces, Black Alley Band and Brian Lenair.

Date and Time: Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 4:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Freedom Plaza (14th St, NW and Pennsylvania Ave, NW)

Fireworks Display: A “must-see”, impressive display of fireworks will light up the night’s sky, signaling the explosive formal ending of all official celebrations. The Fireworks Finale will take place at Freedom Plaza, and begins shortly after the concert ends.
Date and Time: Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 8:45pm to 9:15pm
 Location: Freedom Plaza (14th St, NW and Pennsylvania Ave, NW)
