DCOA E*News At-A-Glance
On last week, Executive Director, Dr. John M. Thompson provided an interview with WUSA9 news reporter Debra Alfarone on, "Seniors Help to End Senior Hunger." Nearly 40 percent of the food produced in this country
ends up in a landfill. At the same time, millions of seniors go without enough
food to eat. In the nation’s capital, the D.C. Office on Aging is
addressing this paradox with the help of the National Foundation to End Senior
Hunger (NFESH). In three of DCOA’s
senior wellness centers, plate waste (leftovers) is being: (1) separated and collected with the help of
the seniors, (2) measured by wellness center staff with cutting-edge technology
which helps DCOA reduce waste by adjusting its menus to the seniors’ tastes,
(3) diverted from trash to compost where food waste becomes nutrient-rich soil.
In the spring, the seniors at the wellness centers will take growing classes
and use the soil created from their leftovers to grow fresh vegetables in
senior-friendly garden beds. DC is showing the nation how wasted food can go
from trash to treasure.
