Description: Hundreds of Leaders of Diaspora organizations and nationals from the Mano River Union nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea will gather in Washington D.C on Friday December 5, for a major Diaspora Summit on Ebola. The summit is expected to bring together organizational leaders and nationals of the West African Diaspora community from all regions of the United States, Europe, and Canada in a united effort to halt the deadly Ebola epidemic which has heavily engulfed the Mano River region of West Africa. They will join major U.S. government and international non-governmental organizations (INGO’s) in a bid to coordinate and synchronize the multiple relief efforts of Diaspora groups, and enhance initiatives geared towards humanitarian efforts underway in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.
The Washington Summit is organized by the Diaspora Ebola Network (DEN), a joint Venture of leading Diaspora organizations, in collaboration with the USAID-Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI), the Government of the District of Columbia Office of African Affairs, the CDC, and Samaritan Purse. Diaspora organizations working in partnership to host the Summit include the Coalition of Concerned Liberians, (CCL), the Federation of Sierra Leoneans in America, and the Guinean Association of America, and the European Federation of Liberian Associations (ELFA), along with several national alumni and county based organizations. Under the theme “Working Together to Help End Ebola”, deliberations at the Summit will be centered upon fostering collaboration and meaningful relations among Diaspora organizations and relief groups.

FY2015 African Community Grant Post-Award Meeting

Wednesday, December 3, OAA hosted its FY15 African Community Grant Post-Award
Meeting. The gathering took place at the Reeves Center (2000 14th
Street, NW, 6th floor), with representatives from the eight
community-based organization awardees in attendance. The African Community
Grant Program awarded $100,000 in funding to eight community-based
organizations that provide essential service to the District’s African
community: the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association, CitiWide Computer
Training Center, Ethiopian Community Center, KanKouran West African Dance
Company, Many Languages One Voice, Oromo Community Organization, and The Person
Center/DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
OAA’s Deputy
Director and Grant Manager Heran Sereke-Brhan discussed grant expectations and
reporting requirements. Following this, Aryan Bocquet, Parent Engagement
Manager, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education, gave a brief presentation on
the new My School DC lottery system and discussed ways that grantees can assist
their clients with the application process. OAA Commissioner Loide Jorge was also
on hand to provide an overview of President Obama’s new Executive Order for Immigration
Reform and the benefits it afforded eligible African immigrants in DC.

Mayor Gray’s Statement on December 2nd's DC United Stadium Vote
Mayor Vincent C. Gray released the following statement in response to December 2nd's affirmative vote by the Council on the “District of Columbia Soccer Stadium Development Act of 2014” to move forward with a stadium for DC United at Buzzard Point: “I am pleased the Council voted today to move my soccer stadium proposal forward; however, the funding mechanism the Chairman advanced in a separate bill is clearly unlawful. As the Office of Attorney General has opined, and the Chief Financial Officer has agreed, that bill is void.

Mayor Gray Puts Forth Legislation for Hill East Redevelopment
Plan includes affordable housing, new retail and other neighborhood amenities
Mayor Vincent C. Gray today said he put forth legislation that paves the way for the redevelopment of two District of Columbia-owned parcels located in the Hill East District neighborhood. The legislation will allow the District to dispose of the property to the development team of Donatelli Development and Blue Skye Development in order to create a vibrant, mixed-income, mixed-use urban waterfront community.

Mayor Gray, DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and representatives of the family of Marion Barry released details last Wednesday for memorial events for the late Ward 8 Councilmember and former Mayor of the District of Columbia. Events will begin with Mayor Barry lying in state for 24 hours at the Wilson Building beginning Thursday, December 4 and culminate with a homegoing service at the Washington Convention Center on Saturday, December 6.

Painter Njideka Akunyili Crosby wins American Art Museum Prize
The Smithsonian American Art Museum has awarded the 2014 James Dicke Contemporary Artist Prize to Nigerian born immigrant Njideka Akunyili Crosby for her “bold yet intimate” paintings. Akunyili Crosby is the 11th winner of the annual prize, given to an artist under 50 who has produced a significant body of work. The jurors noted her ability to negotiate between her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria.
