The Office on African Affairs and the U.S Department of State Bureau of African Affairs Host Investing in Africa: How and Why Discussion
Meeting commemorated Global Diaspora Week, and marked the second session of the State Department's African and African American Diaspora Working Group
On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, the Mayor’s Office of African Affairs (OAA) and the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs hosted the second session of the “African and African-American Diaspora Working Group” during Global Diaspora Week. Assistant Secretary Linda Thomas-Greenfield opened the event by stating that the Bureau of African Affairs was “ahead of the game” when it comes to engaging representatives of the African Diaspora and has long recognized its importance. She also noted that the diaspora is composed of African immigrants and African Americans “who may not be able to trace their roots, but are still part of African diaspora.”
OAA Executive Director, Ngozi Nmezi moderated discussions and panelists included, Darren Moore, Executive Director at Smith- Charles Associates Inc., Jeffrey Jackson, Private Senior Advisor in the Africa Bureau of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), John Samuel, Director of Products at Homestrings LLC, Kelley Page Jibrell, Professor of International Business at Howard University, Shelvin Longmire, Director of Corporate Council on Africa’s Infrastructure Program & Working Group, and Vivienne Sequeira, Director of Infrastructure Program and Working Group, Corporate Council on Africa.

Mayor Gray Releases District’s ‘moveDC’ Transportation Plan
Mayor Vincent C. Gray and District Department of Transportation Director Matt Brown released the final moveDC Transportation Plan. The plan is a comprehensive, multimodal transportation strategy that outlines policies, programs and capital investments to enhance the District’s transportation network, and includes detailed “elements” or “master plans” for each mode of travel in the District.

District Announces Opening of New Playground for Children at DC General Family Shelter
Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services BB Otero today announced the opening of a new playground for children at the DC General Family Shelter and thanked Pepco for providing a charitable donation to support the project. The new playground, constructed by the District’s Department of General Services, features two play structures – one for 2-to-5-year-olds and a second for 5-to-12-year-olds. The play structures provide physical and educational activities for children, including slides, climbers, bridges and ramps, and activity panels. Both structures are ADA-accessible and allow children to transfer from their wheelchairs onto the play equipment.

Mayor Gray Applauds Report on Impact of Community Computer Classes
Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined Richard Reyes-Gavilan, Executive Director of the DC Public Library and representatives of the District’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) at the Dorothy I. Height/Benning Neighborhood Library for the release of a report showing the outcomes of a federally-funded computer training program. Kelley Ellsworth, Executive Director of Byte Back, one of the program’s partner organizations, announced that job seekers who took the course had a combined earnings increase of $3.4 million.

ADC Provides Minnesota’s African Immigrants Financial Education
Nasibu Sareva gained inspiration and enduring leadership lessons as he watched his grandfather, Juma, care for about 20 people in a single household in Tanzania. Sareva, who was in the mix of those Juma looked after, often contemplates how one man nurtured a village of children and still managed to maintain his demanding job with the Tanzanian railway system. That also translated into Sareva’s commitment to make his current home, Minnesota, a better place for African immigrants by helping them connect to resources and economic opportunities available here.

How Soccer Restored the NYPD's Relationship With Harlem's African Community
A group of African immigrants beat police officers from the 28th Precinct Monday night in Marcus Garvey Park. Afterwards, they all had pizza. The two groups squared off for the second time in as many months in a friendly soccer match between members of Harlem’s African community and the local precinct. The idea for the soccer game came from a meeting between the imam and the 28th Precinct’s new commanding officer, Nigerian-born Olufunmilo F. Obe, earlier this year.
