Distinguishing Fact from Myth: Understanding Ebola
The joint Office on African Affairs (OAA) – Commission on African Affairs (COAA) education initiative “Distinguishing Fact from Myth: Understanding Ebola” was featured on Voice of America’s Africa 54 program on October 8, 2014. Throughout October, this initiative targets the city’s African residents and wider District community in an effort to raise awareness about Ebola through various media platforms. Vice Chair of the DC Mayor’s Commission on African Affairs Loide Jorge, an immigration attorney, and Commissioner Dr. Akua Asare, a physician, shared insights about the initiative as it related to immigration regulations and health risks.

Investing In Africa: Why and How?
As part of the week long Global Diaspora Week activities, the U.S. Department of State- Bureau of African Affairs & the Mayor's Office on African Affairs are hosting the second African and African-American Diaspora Working Group session, "Investing in Africa: Why and How?" Confirmed participants are Assistant Secretary Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Vivienne Sequeira, Director for Infrastructure at the Corporate Council on Africa; Kelley Page Jibrell, CEO Definitive Strategic Solutions LLC; and Shelvin D. Longmire, US Director, Afrique Expansion, Inc. OAA Executive Director Ngozi Nmezi will moderate the discussions.

FY15 African Community Grant Pre- Bidders Orientation
On Tuesday, October 7 2014, the Office on African Affairs held its second FY2015 African Community Grant Pre-bidders Orientation meeting on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. About 65 attendees, mostly representing African-owned and African-serving community-based organizations in the District, participated in the informational session on grant eligibility and funding requirements. The meeting took place at the Edna Cromwell Community Room at the Franklin D. Reeves Center of Municipal Affairs.

Michellina Wuddah- Martey, Communications Intern
Michellina is a Ghanaian-American; born in Ghana and living in Massachusetts for the past twelve years. She is a fourth- year student studying History and Political Studies at Colby- Sawyer College in New London, NH. Michellina believes interning at OAA serves as a practical extension of her senior capstone which highlights the Diaspora’s ability to marshal resources from abroad to create and sustain an autonomous identity. She looks forward to learning about the District’s diverse African community and serving their needs through OAA's program and activities.

District on Track to Exceed Goal of 10,000 Affordable Housing Units by 2020
Mayor Gray announced that his administration has invested $1.3 billion to create nearly 6,500 affordable housing units across the District of Columbia – an unprecedented city investment in affordable housing. The effort has employed a wide variety of tools, including the Housing Production Trust Fund, Low Income Housing Tax Credits and tax-exempt bonds.

Mayor Gray, Deputy Mayor Miller and DC Innovates Announce Selection of Digital DC Tech Fund Grantees
Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Interim Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development M. Jeffrey Miller and DC Innovates today announced grants for eight tech startups through the Digital DC Tech Fund (DDCTF). DDCTF is a catalytic fund that provides grants of $25,000 to $200,000 along with a customized mentorship program for early- and growth-stage technology ventures in the District of Columbia.

On Wednesday October 7, Mayor Vincent C. Gray, along with Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Beatriz “BB” Otero, Department of Human Services (DHS) Interim Director Deborah Carroll, Department of General Services (DGS) Director Brian J. Hanlon, representatives from the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness (TCP) and the Coalition for the Homeless, DHS staff and customers celebrated the renovation of the permanent location for the Virginia Williams Family Resource Center (VWFRC) at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Access Nollywood, Nigeria’s Booming Film Industry
Many people now know that Bollywood, India’s 101-year-old cinematic tradition, is the world’s largest film industry. But surprisingly, Hollywood is not even the second largest—as of 2009, that honor arguably goes to Nollywood, Nigeria’s 2,500-movie, $600-million-per-year powerhouse, the nation’s second-largest employer after agriculture. Because Nollywood has traditionally had trouble finding markets and distribution networks for its films, it’s mostly been limited to cheap, locally-distributed fare. Over the past couple of years, though, all of that’s started to change.

Frank Dogbe gives his new employees from West Africa a one-year promise. Dogbe, founder and owner of SOS Cleaning, a business that cleans commercial and office buildings, hires immigrants fresh from Africa and gives them one year to show him that they’re well on their way to learning English or that they’re working toward their GED.

One-On-One Business Counseling Session
At this session the staff from The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will provide assistance with navigating through the regulatory environment. 2014 Keds Change Community, Change Your World Grant
Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to girls and women between the ages of 13 and 24 to help achieve their goals of changing the world by creating change within their communities. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The grant will help support the costs of achieving these goals, whether it is related to civic duties, volunteerism, humanitarianism, or other goals.
