Each year, the Mayor’s Annual Africa Festival celebrates diverse
communities of the District’s African diaspora through art, culture, food,
history, and music. Since its inception in 2010, the Festival has fast become
one of the District’s most anticipated cultural events drawing thousands of
attendees. The event stands as a unique testament to the unprecedented growth and
presence of the District’s African residents. It further echoes the goals of OAA’s
Multicultural Awareness and Community Building Program –celebrating the varied identities of African people;
promoting the different cultures within the District’s African community; and encouraging all District residents to learn about African heritage, customs, and
history.

Save the Date: OAA's Health Industry Workshop
The DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs is hosting its third sector-based workshop this year. The program will open with remarks and presentations by District government agencies and other resource groups followed by a networking session. Topics include health care delivery system, wellness, hiring opportunities, health professional licensing, training, and certification programs. Honorees’ Commitment Moves District Closer to Achieving Sustainable DC Goals
On Thursday, June 26, 2014, Mayor Gray honored 10 individuals, businesses, civic organizations, and embassies for demonstrating outstanding achievements and leadership in sustainable practices. “Creating a greener, healthier, and more livable city today and for generations to come requires collaboration and commitment from local government and the private sector. Our winners today have moved us all a step closer to achieving the goals of our Sustainable DC Plan,” said Mayor Gray.

District Joins National ‘Target Cities’ Program, Heralding a New Era of Urban Leadership in Sustainability
City’s Three EcoDistricts Underscore Goals of the Sustainable DC Plan
This week, the District of Columbia joined the Target Cities Program, an elite group of North American cities committed to becoming global leaders in sustainability through neighborhood-scale projects that emphasize environmental performance, social equity and economic growth. Target Cities is a two-year partnership of nine development projects across just seven North American cities. It is designed to amplify and accelerate neighborhood-scale economic and environmental restoration and create replicable models for urban revitalization.

Mayor Gray and Department of Health officials Announce District’s 2013 HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Report
On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, Mayor Gray and officials from the Department of Health introduced the 2013 District of Columbia HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Epidemiology Annual Report. The 2013 HIV/AIDS report provides the annual update on the state of HIV, hepatitis, STDs and TB in the District through the end of 2011. It also includes a more in-depth look at behavioral risk factor contribution to HIV infection among heterosexuals.

US Conference of Mayors Recognizes District for Leadership on Climate Change for Second Straight Year
Award Highlights Innovative Strategies to Ensure a More Sustainable DC
Last week, the US Conference of Mayors honored the District of Columbia for its exemplary work cutting energy use in public buildings, new building codes that advance energy conservation and green construction practices, and stormwater-management policies to expand green areas and reduce harmful runoff into District waterways. The recognition took place at the US Conference of Mayors’ 82nd Annual Conference in Dallas. Mayor Gray attended and accepted the award on behalf of the District.

D.C. minimum wage jumps to $9.50, will continue to climb until 2016
(WJLA) - The ever-changing H Street was busy on Tuesday. One of the
bustling shops in Northeast is the newly opened H Street Market, where
George Ayale is the General Manager.
"Minimum wage, it should be raised in some way, somehow," he says.
Starting Tuesday in D.C., workers paid minimum wage will make more money, as it jumps from $8.25 to $9.50 an hour.

First Elected Public Official of African Immigrant Background in Maryland
Councilman Edouard Haba is the first elected public official of African immigrant background in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Councilman Haba represents the 4th District in the City of Hyattsville Council. He spent his childhood in the West African nation of Guinea and his young adulthood in Rome. “Living in different countries has left me with an understanding of how to deal with diverse people," said Haba. "This is a very diverse city, and it would be nice to see that reflected in the city council, to give a voice to this diversity.

New York City Approves Municipal ID Cards for Undocumented Immigrants
The New York City Council has approved the use of municipal identification cards that will provide its nearly half a million undocumented residents with a way to prove their identity. Democracy Now! co-host and New York Daily News columnist Juan González says the progressive initiative is a big step forward for the immigrant community. He also discusses one of the Democrats’ most closely watched races. This week, 84-year-old Rep. Charles Rangel of New York declared victory over State Sen. Adriano Espaillat in a rematch of their 2012 primary, and secured his 23rd term in office.

Congressional Visit to Nigeria
Representative Steve Stockman led a congressional delegation including Reps. Frederica Wilson, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Lois Frankel and Louie Gohmert to Nigeria. The purpose of the trip was to further investigate the kidnapping of nearly 300 female students from Chibok, in northeastern Nigeria and receive briefings related to the ongoing threat of Boko Haram throughout the region.

First fellows selected for African diaspora initiative
A first round of 33 African-born academics working in North America have been selected for 31 projects at 24 universities across Africa under the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program – and a deadline for new applications is looming. Scholars in the diaspora are being supported to return to Africa for academic collaborations initiated by African institutions.
The deadline for a second application cycle is 21 July, and diaspora scholars and African host institutions are being urged to apply now. The next fellows will be announced in October, for project visits to Africa between December 2014 and August 2015.

District of Columbia to Offer Healthy Summer Meals for Kids
Children and teens can access free nutritious meals and snacks at more than 300 sites across the District of Columbia through the DC Free Summer Meals Program. The program is administered locally by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education. In an effort to combat the reduced access and availability of nutritional foods during the summer months when school is out, participating meal sites serve breakfast and lunch to all District children and teens up to 18 years of age.
