Dear
Neighbors:
The National
Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for this week, as temperatures will rise
to near triple digits. In this weather,
safety is my most important concern. In
order to beat the heat, please take the proper precautions, stay hydrated and
pay attention to any notices from city agencies and my office. I’m also providing the information below
about opportunities to stay cool and safe.
Cooling Centers:
There are
designated cooling centers across the District of Columbia that you can use
when a Heat Emergency is declared. The
one closest to our Ward is:
Frank D. Reeves
Center (Lobby) – Weekdays, 10:00AM – 6:00PM
2000 14th
Street, NW
202-671-0576
Senior Cooling Centers:
Along with
cooling centers, any of our seniors who may need other services should call the
Lead Agency – Terrific Senior Services at 202-939-9020.
Hattie Holmes
Senior Wellness Center – Weekdays, 9:00AM – 2:00PM
324 Kennedy Street,
NW
202-291-6170
Fort Stevens
Recreation Center – Weekdays, 9:00AM – 2:00PM
1327 Van Buren
Street, NW
202-576-6916
Outdoor Pool
Extended Hours:
The DC Department of Parks and Recreation has extended
their outdoor pool hours due to the expected high temperatures this week. The Upshur Recreation Pool, 4300 Arkansas
Avenue, NW will extend their closing hours to 9:00PM today, July 17th.
The Walter Reed Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) and
Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor Hoskins will host a
Community Open House tomorrow, July 18th from 6:30PM – 9:00PM at
Tifereth Israel Congregation, 7701 16th Street, NW. The open house will feature presentations by the developer teams
responding to the recently issued Request for Proposal for the development of
the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center tomorrow. Master developers will begin delivering their
presentations at 7:15PM.
For more information, please contact the Walter Reed LRA
at 202-727-6365.
Because of the excessive heat forecast for the remainder
of the week, Metro will allow riders to carry and drink water on the system
through the end of the service day on Friday, July 19th.
The exception is for water only — in stations and
aboard trains, buses and MetroAccess vehicles.
Passengers are encouraged to use reusable containers or
bottles that can be tightly secured and to use trash receptacles to dispose of
any waste.
For more information, please contact Metro at
202-637-1328.
Each year Ward 4 hosts the CitiOpen Tennis Tournament. This year’s tournament will begin next
Saturday, July 27th to Sunday, August 4th at the William
H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center located at 16th and Kennedy Street,
NW.
The opening day, July 27th will also host the
National Parks Community Day. This day
will include a fun zone with activities and entertainment such as a moon bounce,
inflatable obstacle course, games, face painting, and much more. The first 3,000 residents to register online
or by phone will receive a free reserved ticket. The first 1,500 residents to register will
receive a lunch voucher. To register,
please e-mail Katie Muilenberg at kmuilenberg@lagardere-unlimited.com
or call 202-721-9574.
The CitiOpen Tennis Tournament has since been part of
some of the most innovative changes in tennis, including blue courts and
instant replay/video boards in the stadium.
This year, for the first time in the tournament’s history, a women’s
draw will be added.
Additionally, 1100 off-site parking spaces have been
added. CitiOpen will use the garage at
the former Walter Reed Army Medical base and will provide shuttle service at 20
minute intervals. Coupled with their existing off-site spaces at Van Ness
and St. Johns College, this brings the total to about 4,100 spaces.
For additional information about the tournament, players,
and tickets, please visit http://www.citiopentennis.com.

from 6:30PM – 8:30PM at the Takoma Education Campus located at 7010 Piney
Branch Road, NW.
