Dear Washingtonians,
With grocery bills, childcare, transportation and all the other expenses of everyday life, $10.50 an hour will only stretch so far. One in five Washingtonians live below the poverty line. And many of these folks are the unsung and unnoticed workers who make our city shine – dishwashers, and janitors, and cashiers.
As long as that wage gap exists, we are fighting an uphill battle. That is why I answered President Obama’s call to raise the wage, by sending legislation to the DC Council to raise the hourly minimum wage to $15 by 2020.
Just imagine how much higher we can climb when every resident, in every corner of our city, has a fair shot. You know the saying, a rising tide lifts all boats? By raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, we will put more people on their pathway to the middle class. And in doing so, we will lift up our entire city.

As part of National Crime Victim’s Rights Week, Mayor Bowser announced the launch of the DC Victim Hotline (DCVH). DCVH is a first-of-its-kind, free and confidential resource for anyone who has been impacted by crime in DC. The service is available 24/7 by telephone, text, or online chat. Are You Red-y to Rock? Mayor Bowser officially proclaimed April 14th as ‘Rock the Red’ Day in the District. Residents showed their support of the best team in the NHL by cheering on the Caps and wearing red today. You can find the playoff schedule here.
No Rain Delays Here. Rain and hail couldn’t stop the Mayor and the Washington Nationals from cutting the ribbon on Ryan Zimmerman field on Sunday in SW. The field is a welcome addition to Ward 6 and ensures future generations of DC little leaguers have a place to call home.
RFK’s Future Is Now. Last week, Events DC announced the details of two conceptual plans for the 190-acre RFK Stadium-Armory Campus site. The plans create a special place that honors our city’s history, leverages our waterfront, and creates another vibrant destination in the District.

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) provides quality urban recreation and leisure services for residents of the District of Columbia. DPR supervises many of the District of Columbia's recreation/community centers, parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, spray parks, tennis courts, community gardens, dog parks, aquatic facilities and features. DPR has several openings for Recreation Specialists in its Aquatics Division. An individual in this role governs the conduct of persons at swimming pools and recreation centers and prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations. The Recreation Specialist will also enter the water to rescue persons in distress, resuscitate rescued swimmers, and administer first aid to the injured. Candidates must have knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of lifeguard training, water safety, and CPR.
