You're Invited to the State of the District

March

March 9, 2016 | Volume 2, Issue 9

Dear Washingtonians,

Time has flown by.  It’s hard to believe, but I’m already well into the second year of my Administration.

I am proud of what we've accomplished together.  We made historic investments in schools and affordable housing.  We expanded Kids Ride Free to rail, and opened up the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program to 22-24 years olds – to give more of our young people a fair shot.  And we’ve  taken steps to make our city safer and stronger, by making key investments in our communities and in public safety.

Without a doubt, we have done a lot.  But there is much more to do so that every resident has a fair shot at a pathway to the middle class.

On Tuesday, March 22nd at Arena Stage, I will deliver my second State of the District Address.  It’s a chance to look back on the past year, and discuss our vision for the future.  I hope you’ll join me.

You can RSVP HERE.

Sincerely,

Rally

Everyone Deserves a Home

On Saturday, Mayor Bowser joined residents from across DC and the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing & Economic Development to rally for affordable housing in the District. Mayor Bowser pledged to make affordable housing a top priority when she campaigned for mayor, and that’s exactly what she’s done since taking office. She has committed $100 million to the Housing Production Trust Fund (more than this city has ever committed to before), and put a plan in place to end homelessness in the District. Ending homelessness and producing, protecting, and preserving affordable housing go hand-in-hand. Mayor Bowser’s goal is to ensure that all residents can have an affordable place to call home.

Promoting Innovation and Inclusion at Howard

Yesterday, Mayor Bowser, Howard University, and Luma Lab broke ground on the District’s first Inclusive Innovation Incubator. The new space will support entrepreneurs and businesses that provide products and services that benefit underserved communities. The groundbreaking came ahead of a trip to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas where Mayor Bowser will meet with national tech leaders to promote economic opportunities in the District.

James Bunn

Remembering James Bunn

Last Saturday, Mayor Bowser joined the Bunn Family, Ward 8 neighbors and other District officials to honor and remember the late James Bunn  - by renaming a street in Congress Heights 'James Bunn Way'. Mr. Bunn was a champion for affordable housing and made sure the residents of Ward 8 always had a seat at the table. As a former ANC Commissioner, Executive Director of the Far Southeast Community Organization, and an active Washingtonian, Bunn is remembered as a pillar of the community. Mayor Bowser was proud to rename a street for a gentleman who dedicated his heart and soul to the District.
