Fresh Start 5K

Every year, we all strive for the same thing: we want to start the new year off right.  Well I have got just the solution for you.  This Friday, January 1st, I am hosting the Second Annual Fresh Start 5K Walk/Run.  The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. at the Stadium Armory Metro Station.  This fun run is part of our FitDC initiative to get residents healthy and moving in all 8 wards. I hope to see you at the starting line! Don’t worry: it isn’t a timed run/walk, just a chance to stretch the legs and kick off the new year right. Click here to register for the 5K or click here if you would like to volunteer.

A Fitter DC

As part of FitDC’s effort to encourage residents to stay fit, I have directed the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to waive resident fees at DPR Fitness Centers starting on January 1. Previously, the fitness centers required a paid membership for access, but for 2016, those resident fees will be waived. DPR Fitness Centers offer a variety of exercise equipment, including ellipticals, stationary bikes, treadmills, free weights, universal weight machines and more! Visit DPR’s website to find a fitness center near you – we look forward to seeing you there!

Serving DC

Looking for ways to get involved and give back in the new year?  Check out Serve DC, the District’s office of volunteerism.  Government can do a lot to improve our community, but we can do so much more with the support of passionate and experienced volunteers.  The volunteers of Serve DC have made a difference in the lives of thousands of residents, through the Hands on Hearts CPR Training Program, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, and other programs.  Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser appointed Delano Hunter to serve as DC’s Chief Service Officer.  Delano is an experienced leader who shares Mayor Bowser’s passion for community service.  If you are interested in joining Delano and Serve DC’s wonderful band of volunteers, please check out Serve DC’s website or stop by their office at the Reeves Center on 14th Street, NW. Serve DC is currently recruiting volunteers to join the DC Resident Snow Team.
