Standing with Paris

Dear Washingtonians,

Like all Americans, I was devastated by last Friday’s atrocious attacks in Paris.  Washington stands with our sister city, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and their community.

When Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo visited our city in February, she came to see me at the John A. Wilson Building. We talked about the importance of promoting tolerance and inclusion in diverse cities like ours. And this June, we met again and shared a stage with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and mayors from around the world, where we discussed how residents from diverse backgrounds can live and thrive together in communities across the globe. We stood together then, and we stand together now.

If you would like to send a message to those affected by the attacks, you can sign the French Embassy’s condolence book.

As always, here at home we are focused on the safety and security of our city.  I want to stress that there is no credible threat to the District at this time.

My team and I are working closely with our regional and federal partners to adjust the District’s security response, as needed.  I have spoken directly with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, met with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and have worked with Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier to remain in constant communication with our regional safety partners. In addition, out of an abundance of caution, we have deployed additional law enforcement resources across the city --- some of which are visible, while others are not.

I want to remind everyone: if you see something, say something.  Please call 911 immediately if you notice any suspicious or criminal activity.

In the meantime, we'll continue to pray for Paris.

Sincerely,

A Fresh Start for Walter Reed

Today marked a fresh start for the Walter Reed Campus with its first groundbreaking: a new facility for DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS) Engine Company 22. When complete, this 23,000 square foot building - which will also house Truck 11, Ambulance 22 and the fire investigation unit - will enable first responders to do even more to serve residents, businesses and visitors in Ward 4.  And this is only the beginning for Walter Reed.  I recently introduced legislation to the DC Council that will enable the District to acquire 66 acres from the Army.  Once all is said and done, we'll have an opportunity to create 5,000 jobs, produce 432 affordable housing units, and develop new retail for the Georgia Avenue corridor.  I look forward to returning to see the new DCFEMS Engine 22 and all of the great things that come with it.

AFAM Museum

National Museum of African American History and Culture

On Monday night, I had the honor to speak at a celebration of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture which is currently under construction on the National Mall. When the museum opens at the end of 2016, it will tell the story of the struggle and progress of the African-American community. I believe the District is the perfect place for this new house of history.  In addition to serving as the national stage for civil rights, our city has a rich and deep African-American history.  For more information about the museum, visit the museum’s website.

DOES Career Stories: Job Spotlight:  Clinton Curry, Workforce Development Specialist, Department of Employment Services (DOES)

In addition to shining a spotlight on this year’s #IAMMBSYEP participants, I want to take a moment to tell a success story over at the District’s Department of Employment Services (DOES).

Clinton Curry is a 37-year-old Ward 6 resident who served in the Air Force from 1995 to 1999. Clinton worked with DOES Veterans Services to secure his current position as a Workforce Development Specialist.

“The DOES Veterans Services' staff assisted me a great deal in achieving my career goals. Working with DOES staff made me realize that I can start the next chapter in my life.  Being a veteran, DOES was quick and efficient in leading me into my career, and this is the same dedication I pass on to all my customers.”

He also shared his work experience working at DOES:

“The best part of my job is working with our clients in the American Job Centers and the DC community overall. It feels great to assist and provide knowledge and resources to our customers. Receiving an email, phone call, or voicemail stating that they got an interview or job thanks to our help truly brings my heart joy.”

Clinton, thank you for your service to our country, and thank you for helping your fellow residents find pathways to the middle class.  I am proud that you are a member of #TeamMuriel.
