Mission:

The mission of the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (OAA) is to ensure that the full range of health, education, employment, social services, safety, business and economic development information, services and opportunities are accessible to the District’s African immigrant communities. 

By serving as the liaison between the District’s African immigrant communities, District government agencies and the Mayor, OAA aims to:  Improve the quality of life of the District’s diverse African- born constituencies and their children; Increase civic and public engagement in the District’s African immigrant communities; and Support community development.

Minimum Wage Increase Awareness Event

The minimum wage is increasing to $10.50 an hour in the District of Columbia. To commemorate the news, the Executive Office of the Mayor  will have a press event and then distribute information directly to patrons across the District.

The 2015 theme of the festival is showcasing  Africa's various regions through cultural and environmental activities. Activities include: nature hikes, yoga, free face-painting, arts and crafts for children, an African fashion show, cultural food demonstrations/ free food tasting, African Griots as well as cultural dance and music.

Author Talk with the Honorable Louis W. Sullivan

National Museum of African Art is hosting Honorable Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., for a reading from his autobiography. “Breaking Ground: My Life in Medicine” recounts Sullivan’s extraordinary life, beginning with his childhood in Jim Crow-era Georgia through his trailblazing endeavors in the fields of medicine and healthcare. A discussion and book signing will follow the reading.

MOAA Announces FY2016 African Community Grant Notice of Funding Availability and Request for Applications

NOFA FY16

Background Information:
The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA) is soliciting grant applications from qualified community-based organizations (CBOs) serving the District’s African constituents [residents and/or business owners] - for its FY16 African Community Grant. The grant is intended to fund programs that provide targeted services and resources to the District’s African residents and/or business owners in areas of need in the community. Funding priority areas identified for FY16 are jobs and workforce development; linkage to health, wellness, and human services; youth engagement; and promotion of arts, culture, and the humanities.

Amount of Number of Awards:  
MOAA expects to award up to 10 grants. Eligible organizations can be awarded up to $20,000.

Length of Award: Grant awards will be for one (1) year.

Eligibility Criteria: Organizations may apply if they meet all of the following eligibility requirements at the time of application:

·  Be a community-based or faith-based organization with a      501(c)(3) status   

·  Organization or program serves the District’s African            residents or business owners

·  Organization or program is located in the District of              Columbia

·  New to FY16 Applicants who have received African            Community Grants for three consecutive award cycles are    NOT eligible to apply for a period of one fiscal year              following their last award.

Young African ConneXions Annual Summit 2015

 As part of its Youth Development program, the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA) invites you to the first-ever Young African ConneXions Annual Summit taking place on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Howard University School of Business Auditorium at 3:00pm. 

The summit aims to create a platform that will bring together bright minds to have idea-focused peer-to-peer exchanges, and foster interactions between the District’s African immigrant community and young professionals from the continent on topics such as leadership, technology, education, and the importance of creating sustained linkages.

Inspired by former South African President Nelson Mandela’s life and 67 years of public service, MOAA will launch its first-ever Annual Mandela Day of Service in the District of Columbia on Saturday, July 18, 2015. This program is designed to promote community service and civic engagement in the African communities in the District. During the day of service volunteers will conduct a street clean-up and debris removal at Good Hope Marketplace in Ward 7 located at the intersection of Alabama Ave. & Naylor Rd SE from 9:00am to 1:00pm.

Pathways to the Middle Class: A Fresh Start for the Summer Youth Employment Program

On Monday, 29 June, 2015 began the 36th year of the Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).  More than 500 employers across the District will host nearly 15,000 young people for a six-week internship that provides valuable, real-life work experience.  SYEP serves District youth of various demographic and education backgrounds.  However, 61 percent of participants (9,181) come from Wards 7 and 8, where the unemployment rate and the opportunity gap is the highest.  

For the first time ever, Mayor Muriel Bowser has expanded the program to include 1,000 youth ages 22-24.  In addition to being placed in SYEP internships, these 22-24 year olds will be connected to a wide array of programs and services to help them identify a career path and secure year-round, sustainable employment.

USCIS Invitation: Temporary Protected Status Registration Period Extended for Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is hosting a teleconference to discuss the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations and registration extension for Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline for initial registration from May 20, 2015, to Aug. 18, 2015, for eligible nationals of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone (and people without nationality who last habitually resided in one of those three countries). During this teleconference, USCIS officials will explain the registration procedures, provide information on EADs and fee waivers, and respond to your questions and concerns.
