Call for Reviewers
The Mayor’s Office on
African Affairs (OAA) is seeking qualified individuals to serve as reviewers
for its FY16 African Community Grant. Reviewers help OAA select the best
proposals from a competitive pool of applicants and are chosen based on their
knowledge, education, and experience. The review process is designed to ensure
that each grant is awarded on the basis of evaluation selection criteria.
Reviewers are therefore essential to the grant process as they evaluate and
score applications and provide objective recommendations for potential
recipients. The grant review panel will reflect a broad diversity of ethnicity,
gender, age, and experience.
All residents of the
District of Columbia metropolitan area are encouraged to apply to serve as
reviewers. All reviewers must be actively involved with the DC African
community. Expertise in the following areas is strongly suggested and should be
noted when applying: * Strong writing,
listening, and speaking skills; * Relevant education, training, and/or experience in the subject areas of
the grant program; * Knowledge of and/or experience with program planning, implementation,

Mayor Bowser Commemorates the 150th Anniversary of Juneteenth
Friday, June 19, 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth. On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, a quarter of a million slaves were freed, ending slavery in the United States. To commemorate the 150th anniversary, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement:
“Today is a day for reflection and remembrance. We honor those who struggled to ensure our freedoms. We have come a long way since the first Juneteenth, but we as a nation must remain vigilant as we continue to build an even brighter future for everyone.”

Mayor Bowser Announces Comprehensive Drug Enforcement Strategy
On Monday, June 18, 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District's Public Safety
and Health leadership held a press conference to announce a new comprehensive
drug enforcement strategy. In the last decade, the District has seen a
significant shift in the nature and tactics used to perpetrate violent crimes.
The Bowser Administration has developed a comprehensive drug enforcement
strategy to respond to the changing climate.
"Far too many of our
residents are still impacted by drug usage - whether because of drug sales
occurring near their homes or because they or their family members suffer from
drug addiction," said Mayor Bowser. "It is my duty to provide the safest and
healthiest environment for our residents and visitors. We will do that by
innovating and adapting, and providing our public safety officials with the
tools they need to get the job done. We will also make sure healthcare
professionals have the resources to help people get the treatment they need to
fight and recover from drug usage."

Through the Eyes of the Diaspora
When anthropology Professor Jean Muteba Rahier teaches his African Civilizations course, he already knows the common stereotypes he will have to break down throughout the semester. Africa is more than a continent of desert, safaris and poverty. It is a continent of historic civilizations and modern metropolitan cities. And in the 21st century, it is a continent poised for phenomenal economic and academic growth.

The Rise of Africa’s Super Vegetables
In Nairobi, indigenous vegetables were once sold almost exclusively at hard-to-find specialized markets; and although these plants have been favoured by some rural populations in Africa, they were largely ignored by seed companies and researchers. Now, indigenous vegetables are in vogue. They fill shelves at large supermarkets even in Nairobi, and seed companies are breeding more of the traditional varieties every year.
