As part of its Capacity Building Development Program, the Mayor's Office on African Affairs is hosting a 2-day grant proposal writing workshop and discussion on funding resources for non-profit organizations. These programs are designed as targeted efforts to support the District's African serving community- and faith-based organizations who seek to strengthen their capacity and enhance their institutional sustainability.

The Mayor's Office on African Affairs and the
Commission on African Affairs Conducted Two Successful Immigration Workshops
On Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, 2015, the Commission on African Affairs (COAA) and the Office on African Affairs (OAA) teamed up with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and immigration attorneys to conduct two informational sessions on President Obama's Executive Actions on Immigration. The sessions were conducted in English, French, and Amharic and hosted by the Renaissance Center at the Lamond-Riggs Library in Ward 5, and by DSK Mariam Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Ward 4, respectively.

Mayor Bowser Launches Month Long “innoMAYtion” Initiative
(Washington, DC) – On Monday May 4th 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser kicked off Small Business Week by announcing innoMAYtion, a month-long initiative to showcase innovative programs that will create jobs, engage residents, and position the District as a hub of innovation. Highlighting public and private sector programs, innoMAYtion will concentrate on innovative ways the city responds to meet the needs of District communities.
"Throughout the month of May, my Administration will showcase how District residents and businesses are creating economic opportunity for residents by taking innovative approaches to complex problems," said Mayor Muriel Bowser. "In Washington, we are tackling challenges head on and creating good-paying jobs that create pathways to the middle class for District residents."

Mayor Bowser Announces #IWishUKnew Digital Engagement Campaign at 2015 SYEP Career Exploration Fair
(Washington, DC) – Friday, May 1, 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a new digital engagement campaign designed to foster a dialogue between residents and key stakeholders, including the faith community, law enforcement, the business community and others. The campaign encourages District residents to share on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram their thoughts using the hashtag #IWishUKnew.
“Engagement is the first step in empowerment and through this campaign we hope to better understand other members of our community,” said Mayor Bowser. “As we continue to build pathways to the middle class, it’s important that we foster a robust and collaborative conversation that allows all voices to be heard.”

Mayor Bowser Joins President Obama to Announce Efforts to Improve Students’ Access to Public Libraries
(Washington, DC) - Thursday, April 30, 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined President Obama at Anacostia Library where the President announced the next phase of his ConnectED initiative. The ConnectED Library Challenge is a commitment by more than 30 communities, including Washington, DC, to put a library card into every student’s hand so they will have access to the learning resources and books they can read for pleasure, all available in America’s libraries.
“Washington, DC, is proud to participate in President Obama’s ConnectED initiative which expands learning opportunities to students across the country,” said Mayor Bowser. “Access to the library system’s rich collection of books, music, magazines, ebooks and more will give students the tools they need to expand their minds and open up new pathways to the middle class later in life.”

A Growing National Alliance: African Diaspora and Immigrant Rights Group
An increasing number of African and African American civil rights and immigration advocates in the United States are joining forces to address and raise awareness about common issues plaguing both communities. The recent forum “Engagement and Mobilization of African Immigrants” brought together civil society from both groups, and addressed the need for a broader social justice movement in the country.

ARISE News, a Nigerian news and entertainment channel won its first Emmy Award at the 58th Annual New York Emmy Awards on May 2nd. The channel was rewarded for its documentary “Game Changers: How the Harlem Globetrotters Battled Racism” that addressed the topic of race relations in American professional basketball. Cote d’Ivoire’s reported cereal yields surpassed 3 tons per hectare (t/ha) in 2013. This marks the first time a mainland sub-Saharan African country (excluding temperate zone South Africa) has ever crossed the 3 t/ha threshold. Agronomists often describe the jump from roughly 1 t/ha to 2 or 3 t/ha as an agricultural “green revolution,” the first stage leap in a country’s agricultural productivity.

FY 2016 Justice Grants Administration Consolidated Solicitation (JGA)
The Justice Grants Administration announces the availability of Federal funds to focus on culturally-competent and community-based (1) youth delinquency prevention and diversion programs; and (2) adult reentry programs targeted to provide mental health and/or substance abuse treatment services. Data-driven and scientific-based practices must be implemented to enhance community-based services for program participants. Adult reentry programs are required to partner with District agencies.

FY 2016 Refugee Resettlement Program Grant
To facilitate the purpose of the Refugee Resettlement Program (Program), The Family Services Administration (FSA) intends to award federal grant funds to one (1) eligible organization that directly assists refugees in the District. FSA intends to make one (1) grant award of up to one hundred and eighty thousand federal dollars ($180,000) to fund an eligible organization for a twelve (12) month period with the option of two (2) additional years if funding is available.
