We have a new logo!

with Newsletter Editor, Elizabeth Fischer Laurie

As part of a year of major changes at YGL, we are unveiling a new logo. YGL understands the need to evolve with the changing needs of our members and continues to strive to serve you better. Throughout this month's newsletter, you will find opportunities to provide feedback and contacts to YGL to help us change to meet your needs.

Change is often a part of an individual's summer plans too. Whether you are getting ready to go back to school, cheering on those who will hit the books in the fall, embarking on life-altering travels, or simply preparing for the whirlwind of holidays that begin in September, use this time as an opportunity to reinvent yourself. What better way to do it than by attending NextGen. There are only a few short weeks left to register for one of the best transformative experiences you can have this summer. We hope to see you there and wish you the best as you change along with us!

We Still Need Responses for the YGL University Survey!

YGL University Survey

YGL Members, help us to unleash the hidden power of education!

YGL is committed to provide an authentic voice to a new generation of aspiring government leaders. In YGL we know that no one dreams of having a mediocre career – every emerging leader dreams of making a difference. That’s why we are in the process of building the YGL University, a novel initiative to equip young leaders with the right skills at the right time for the right mission.

Federal Agencies are facing tremendous budget constraints, and often funding for training and development is the first department to feel ill effects. This is our time to stand up and offer a solution to the people who need it the most.

Our goal is to provide unparalleled learning experiences by connecting formal, informal and collaborative learning. YGLUniversity will deliver targeted learning when and where our members want to learn. The training classes will be relevant to their day-to day job, ranging from leadership development, soft skills, personal branding, networking, team building, and other important topics.

YGL University’s purpose is to provide easy access to training, mentoring, and networking opportunities to thousands of Emerging Leaders around United States. We ask you to complete a very short survey that will help us customize the YGL University Learning and Development Strategy that will help grow the world’s best leaders in the coming year.

Please take a moment to tell us what you need, and YGL University will help you get there.  Take the survey now on Survey Monkey

Lynnie
Leadership Q & A

Recently Lynnie Martin interviewed Cherlyn "Sunny" Hester, the workforce support and development program manager at the Air Force Technical Applications Center at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. Cherlyn has also worked in several roles at the Department of Health and Human Services. She shares how she got where she is today (the adage, "Success is when preparation meets opportunity" applies here), what she looks for in employees, and the riskiest career move she made (joining the federal workforce). You can read the full article here.

Each month, the Young Government Leaders' feature column offers a fresh perspective on news and information, not just for current and future generations of YGL, but to all feds interested in hearing from those who will meet the next set of challenges facing the federal government. More articles relevant to your professional life can be found on fedmanager.com.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Do you enjoy reading Lynnie's regular column on Government Executive? Now is your chance to share your story or encourage someone you admire to share their's.

Lynnie is seeking fresh faces to interview at the GS-12 level and above. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact her directly at lynniemartinps@gmail.com.

FREE Learning Opportunities with GSA's Open Opportunities Program and DigitalGov

You know how difficult it is to get professional development and training due to tight budgets in your agencies. Through the Open Opportunities program federal employees gain access to a variety of professional development opportunities by working on digital projects across the government. These opportunities are tasks and projects that will help you develop and strengthen skills, work with others across agencies to get stuff done (not just your stuff) and be part of a group of cool people working to break down silos.

Now you’re probably thinking why would my agency let me spend time working on projects for other agencies?  Your agency wins by learning from other agencies, developing staff talent, helping to make government more responsive, modern and effective by improving the way government works ONE task at a time.

So, with Open Opportunities everyone wins, you, your agency, the agency you completed the task for and all of government.

Be sure to check out how it works and watch our video to learn first hand about the work Open Opportunities innovators are doing and the benefits received by both the participants and their agencies.

What about you?

Join in and together we can build a flexible government workforce that can adapt quickly offering their knowledge and expertise when and where they are needed.
