Innovations to Improve Communities

intro image

The San Diego region is known for its innovative economy. In 2013, 412 innovation start-ups were launched in the San Diego region, the most technology start-ups since 2007. Technology also plays an important role at the County of San Diego.  The County uses technology to support services for 16,000 County employees at more than 200 facilities, partners with community organizations to provide computers and laptops to those in need, and develops mobile applications for residents to use on a daily basis. Together, the County and our community partners are working to improve lives through technology.

The County Technology Office (CTO) supports a full range of IT services and works hard to accomplish the countywide strategic goals of improving opportunities for safe communities, sustainable environments and healthy families.

The County’s IT services are top notch.  Recently, CTO competed for the Best Digital County Award given every year by the National Center for Digital Government and garnered a 2nd place finish in the nation.

This month’s edition of the Live Well San Diego newsletter features stories, events and resources about opportunities to utilize technology throughout the county:

  • Learn how QR Codes at Parks Can Help You Get Fit
  • Read about a County employee who develops apps to help employees and residents
  • Hear how San Diego Health Connect expanded health information exchange efforts
  • Learn about the County Library’s Teen/Elder Computer Help (T.E.C.H.) program
  • Read about the County’s Land and Water Quality mobile web app and its use to alert residents about water quality
  • Learn about a new mobile app that allows you to easily report graffiti
  • Read about the upcoming San Diego County Credit Union Super Shred Event

We hope you get to experience the many ways technology is helping us create a healthy, safe and thriving community.

The Live Well San Diego Top 10 Indicators

(This short article is a continuation in a series featuring the Live Well San Diego Top 10 Indicators.)

Progress in achieving the Live Well San Diego vision is measured by the Top 10 Indicators that capture overall well-being across five Areas of Influence - Health, Knowledge, Standard of Living, Community and Social.

Mobile health and well-being is a developing technology focus area that can assist individuals in maintaining a healthy lifestyle in every way.  Smartphone apps can have an impact on all aspects of life, changing the way we access information for healthcare, the environment and public services:

  • Personal health apps can inspire positive behavioral or lifestyle changes. Health apps that monitor fitness, nutrition and weight loss can aid in tracking personal progress towards health goals to improve health outcomes, benefiting life expectancy measure and quality of life measure.
  • Environmental apps can provide information on water, air quality and beach closure notifications; and information about public parks, benefiting the physical and built environment measures.
  • Apps that provide information on self-sufficiency programs benefit vulnerable populations, positively impacting food insecurity and lack of health insurance measures.

For more information on available apps that can help improve health, safety and well-being visit the County App Center.
