City Awarded $16 Million for Williams Rd Safe Street Corridor Project
Salinas, CA – The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on December 13, 2023, that the City of Salinas will be awarded $16 million for the Williams Rd. Safe Street Corridor Project to implement multiple safety elements on Williams Rd. The project addresses dangerous traffic conditions and behaviors on the corridor which include speeding, traffic signal non-compliance, and lack of adequate pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.
Between 2017 - 2021. there were 74 traffic collisions along Williams Rd., 11 of which involved pedestrians.
Elements of the project include:
- Installation of a single lane roundabout at Williams Rd. and E. Market St.
- Installation of curb extensions for increased pedestrian safety
- High-visibility crosswalks
- Improved lighting
- New traffic signals
The corridor serves as the main thoroughfare for the Alisal community and connects residents to schools, libraries, fire station, shopping centers, and other local businesses.
