City of Riverside, California Ward 6 Update

Jim Perry
City Council Member - Ward 6

A Message From Your Council Member…

Greetings it is 2015! Our L.A. Fitness in Ward 6 will be finished soon, so don’t forget to make your new year’s resolution. Over at the Galleria at Tyler, we had Buffalo Wild Wings and Pizza 90 open up in time for hungry holiday shoppers. Take a peak to the bottom of the newsletter for an update on the Home Front at Camp Anza Project. In November 2014, we hit the lowest record since June 2013 of graffiti in the ward at only 175 calls for service. We look forward to many more accomplishments in the coming year and as always please contact us with any concerns. We are here to serve.

Running in the New Year

Ward 6 received many blessing this past year. We finished off the year by putting 180 new pairs of shoes on kids in Alvord Unified. We want to thank the Riverside Police Officers’ Association, the Running Center and New Balance Shoes for coming together and sponsoring 100 students at Wells Middle School with running shoes. We also had a joint shoe donation from A Foundation for Kids and the Riverside Police Officers’ Association for elementary school children. These 80 students were selected from Collett Elementary and Orrenmaa Elementary. Ward 6 thanks all the organizations who came together during the holidays to make a difference for these kids.

Town Hall Meeting

Join us February 19th for a community meeting co-hosted with Supervisor Kevin Jeffries and Council Member Jim Perry. Updates will be given on current projects in and around the La Sierra area. We will also have government offices on-site to answer specific questions. We look forward to seeing you February 19th at 6pm, Hillcrest High School’s MPR (11800 Indiana Avenue, Riverside).

Citizens Academy

Congratulations to the Ward 6 residents who took on the challenge, enrolled and graduated from the Riverside Police Department’s Citizen Academy. The Citizen Academy was established to provide our community members with an inside look at how the department runs its day-to-day operations. Our participants gained a better perspective of how the police department operates. Ward 6 Class of 2014: Sharon Dodgson, Catherine Hendon and William Timmons.

Employment Update

The California Employment Development Department has released the preliminary November 2014 employment figures. The unemployment rate for the City decreased (0.2%) over the last month to 8.3%.  The unemployment rate for the County also decreased (0.2%) to 8.2%. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 7.1% for the State and 5.5% for the nation during the same reporting period.

Neighborhood Fest

The City of Riverside will be holding its 2nd Neighborhood Fest and it will take place in the West end of Riverside. Neighborhood Fest is an opportunity to discover and to celebrate what you love about where you live. The event will take place January 25th from 11am-4pm at La Sierra University Zapara School of Business (4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside).
