Night Time Pile Driving in the Wood Streets/Downtown Area

Caltrans has announced that beginning Tomorrow, November 4 the final stage of pile driving for replacement of the Pachappa Railroad Bridge will begin. This work is in the center divider of the freeway and will require lane closures for access. Since daytime lane closures during the week result in unacceptable traffic delays the pile driving will occur during the night time hours.

Beginning Tuesday, November 4 at 9:00 p.m. lanes will be closed on the 91 Freeway in the vicinity of the construction and pile driving will continue all night until 5:00 a.m. For the weekend, beginning at 9:00 p.m. Friday November 7 pile driving will take place continuously until 5:00 a.m. Monday November 10.

The below map and text further describe the lane closures and scope of the work. Working the 24 hour a day schedule over the weekend will allow completion of the pile driving in half the time that night time only work would take. This means we only have to listen to pile driving all night for 10 days rather than 20.

Caltrans has hired a person to help with any questions or problems residents experience with this project. You may contact Dennis Green at (909) 800-0451 with questions or problems.

It is clear that this work will cause inconvenience and frustration to those near the work site and to people using the affected parts of the 91 Freeway. You may hear the pile driving even at a substantial distance from the work site. There does not seem to be any way to eliminate the impact and the plan adopted by Caltrans will shorten the time as much as possible. They hope, but do not promise, to complete the work in less than the identified 10 day period. The good news is that this is the last pile driving planned for the freeway expansion in Downtown Riverside.

Having this completed before Thanksgiving will truly give us all something to be thankful for.
