City of Riverside, California Ward 6 Update

A Message From Your Council Member…

Ward 6 welcomes the New Year with enthusiasm! We have great projects coming to our ward this year. The Galleria at Tyler Mall area will be welcoming some new names including but not limited to White House/Black Market, Famous Dave’s BBQ and other restaurants in the immediate area. We are expecting funding for Camp Anza to be approved within the next few months and to break ground by the end of summer. The Walmart on Van Buren will begin its renovations early 2014 and we look forward to the traffic issues disappearing with their new store plan. We will continue to stop by local neighborhood groups, attend AUSD board meetings, parent groups, community events and school events. 2013 has given us a small window to the progress coming to Ward 6. Please keep us informed on how we can help your community.

                 Cheers and enjoy 2014!

Christmas Tree Recycling

Christmas trees are collected with the normal trash pick-up from now until January 17th. Please follow these procedures for proper disposal of your tree:

  • Remove the stand, ornaments and decorations
  • Cut your tree into 4 foot lengths
  • Place on the curb next to your green container
  • Flocked trees are not GreenWaste and should be placed next to the brown container

Please do not place Christmas trees in your GreenWaste container. For more information contact our Public Works Department at 951-826-5311.

Employment Update

The unemployment rate in the City of Riverside was 9.7% in November 2013, down from 10.2% in October 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 11.6%. This compares to an unemployment rate of 9.6% for Riverside County and 6.6% for the nation during the same period.

Student Writing Contest

This year’s BEST Awards will be featuring a student writing contest focusing on the many advantages of being bilingual and is based on the California Association of Bilingual Educator’s theme: Creating Multilingual Magic. The prompt for the writing contest is: How does being bilingual create a change in my community? The winner will receive a $500 scholarship, pending proof of acceptance at an institution of higher education. For more information contact Maria Escalera at 951-509-5075.

Welcome Our New Presidents

Alvord Unified School District selected a new Board President during their December meeting. Greg Kraft was the unanimous choice by the AUSD Board. Riverside Unified School District also passed on the reigns of Board President to Patricia Lock-Dawson during their December meeting.

Congratulations to Greg Kraft and Patricia Lock-Dawson. Ward 6 looks forward to working and partnering with you on future projects!

311 Contest Coming Soon

We will be hosting a contest during the entire month of February to promote the use of our 311 system. Ward 6 residents will be eligible for prizes if they register between Feb. 1-28. Registration is easy. You will simply need to inform us of your participation by providing your address, email and/or phone number to track your reports for the month. The participant with the most reports will win a prize! This is a great way to assist in keeping our neighborhood clean and well maintained.
