City of Riverside, California Ward 6 Update

A Message From Your Council Member…

The holidays are upon us and the festivities in our homes and work will begin soon. We are keeping busy in the City of Riverside to make sure our residents are being taken care of during all the hustle and bustle. Don’t be surprised if you see us with Santa’s elves patrolling for graffiti, abandoned shopping carts, potholes, missed trash and homeless encampments. Watch for our upcoming community based contest in early 2014. Enjoy the holidays and we look forward to starting the New Year with continued service to all the residents of Ward 6.

AUSD PEP Grant

Alvord Unified School District was selected on a nationwide level to receive a federal grant through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP). The AUSD PEP Grant is titled “We Fit” and is currently in year two of a three-year implementation period. The total amount of the 3 year grant is worth $1,083,607.

All PEP Grantees are required to assess the following:

  • Measure One: The percentage of students who engage in 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Grantees must use pedometers for students in grades K-12.
  • Measure Two: The percentage of students who achieve age-appropriate cardiovascular fitness levels. Grantees are required to use the 20-meter shuttle run to assess cardiovascular fitness.
  • Measure Three: The percentage of students served by the grant who consumed fruit two or more times per day and vegetables three or more times per day.

“We Fit” gives AUSD the opportunity to implement a comprehensive physical fitness, health, and wellness program for 4th through 12th grade students, that is transforming the district’s former sports education program to a wellness based physical education environment where the focus is on developing healthy activities and lifestyles with regular exercise and proper nutrition. The success of the “We Fit” program will be measured not only in the improvement in student’s fitness and increased knowledge of healthy habits, but by the overall attitude of the staff and families, enthusiasm of the students, and the overall pride of the Physical Education program in AUSD.

Spark of Love

The Spark of Love program is a collaborative effort between with the Riverside Fire Department (RFD) and Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department (PRCSD), in conjunction with KABC Channel 7. We encourage those of you who can donate a gift to do so, by dropping off toys at your local fire station. Toys will be distributed to those who have pre-registered for the program on Thursday, December 19.

***Ward 6 residents in need this Holiday Season may register at Bryant Park.***

  1. Residents are required to complete Spark of Love application
  2. Resident must show proof of residency for children receiving toys (Child must live in City of Riverside)

Boards and Commissions

Congratulations to both Erin House for his appointment to the Board of Library Trustees and Antonio Villegas for his appointment to the Metropolitan Museum Board. We also want to thank former Community Police Review Commission representative, Eve Maciel, for her time served.

Train Quiet Zones

The Riverside City Council recently approved the completion of various train quiet zones within the city. This should take place in approximately twelve months. Ward 6 will have two new quiet zones railroad crossings one at Pierce Street and the other on Buchannan Avenue. This will allow our residents to sleep peacefully through the night.

2013 AUSD Principal of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Sherri Kemp, Principal of Loma Vista Intermediate School, for being selected as the Alvord Unified School District 2013 Principal of the Year.

Jim Perry and Diana Medina

“Dr. Kemp is an inspirational leader to our students and a tremendous asset to our ommunity.”
