A Message From Your Council Member…

This month of September, we will be focusing on keeping our community healthy. We ask that you also take time this month to challenge your family, friends and neighbors to get active and make healthy eating choices.

We are happy to share that though our partnership with Feeding America Arlanza Elementary School in Alvord Unified School District has been selected to participate in the Kids Produce Market Program. This was made possible by a $10,000 Child Hunger Program Grant awarded to Feeding America. The Kids Produce Market will allow the 610 students attending Arlanza Elementary to benefit from taking home fresh fruits and vegetables once a month. We look forward to participating on their premier on September 21st.

Walk with the Mayor on September 2nd at 6pm. Join Mayor Bailey and me for a short walk and talk as we discover the natural beauty of Challen Hill (4602 Challen Avenue). Walking up the hill will give us an opportunity to exercise together as a community and to enjoy the view of our surrounding neighborhoods. For more information contact FArreola@riversideca.gov or (951)826-5897.

Let’s Walk IE! Parkview Community Hospital will be hosting a walk Against Childhood Obesity on September 26th at 9am; followed by a Health Fair presented by Leading Today’s Youth. Bring the entire family to participate in the Walk, Health Screening, Activities and more!

Riverside Citywide 9/11 Day of Service

The City of Riverside will be hosting its first Annual 9/11 Day of Service. This Citywide Event came together by a group of businesses, organizations and volunteers that wanted to spotlight our small contribution in the first response efforts on September 11, 2001.

On Friday, September 11, 2015 we will remember the tragedy that took place, but we will also be honoring our first responders in Riverside. The City of Riverside partnered with various local businesses and organizations to put together a day of various activities.

An Opening Ceremony will take place at 9:11am in front of City Hall (3900 Main St. Riverside). Presentation of the Colors will be provided by our Riverside Police and Fire Honor Guards. Musical performances will take place that morning by the UCR Pipe Band and solo performances by students from Alvord Unified and Riverside Unified School Districts.

The America Red Cross and LifeStream will be holding Blood Drives and/or CPR Demos at various locations including the Galleria at Tyler and La Sierra University. Over 25 local businesses will sponsor Thank You Lunches at ALL of our City Fire and Police stations.

A Closing Ceremony will be taking place at La Sierra University’s Glory of God Grace Plaza at 5:45pm. Musical performances will be presented by LSU’s Music Department, La Sierra High School Band and Riverside King Band. Recognitions will be presented to all the partners and sponsors during the closing ceremony. The evening will end with a “Reflection of the Day” on campus. We look forward to have you attend this Special Riverside Citywide Celebration. For more information click here.

Volunteers for Police Explorers Academy

The Explorers Academy will be having police explorer competitions. We expect over 30 agencies to bring their youth explorer teams to compete in a variety of events that are police related. This is a private event; however, it requires a lot of help to put on. We expect about 400+ people in attendance. Any help you can provide would be great. Volunteers will be assigned different responsibilities such as working a water station, snack bar, providing directions to participants, manning gates, etc. The event will take place on Saturday September 19th–Sunday September 20th from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hillcrest HS located at 11800 Indiana Ave Riverside, CA 92503. For more information contact Sgt. Flores/ cflores@riversideca.gov.

An Update on the Former Vons
former Vons site on La Sierra & Magnolia

We have continued our conversations with Vons/Safeway representatives regarding our concern for the former Vons site on La Sierra & Magnolia. They have agreed and installed a decorative wrap on the exterior of the building. However, due to a strict confidentiality agreement we will not have any additional information on the future tenant until a sublease is executed. Vons representatives have assured us that they are moving forward with backfilling the space aggressively. Remember to visit and shop at the other business located within this center. They would appreciate your patronage.
