City of Riverside Ward 6 Update

Jim Perry
City Council Member - Ward 6

A Message From Your Council Member…

August is here and many of our students are getting ready to return to school. In just a few days, Hillcrest High School will welcome their very first senior class! Mark your calendars. Alvord Unified School District students return to school on August 13th. Riverside Unified School District students begin instruction on August 24th. We encourage parents to get involved in their local schools and help make a difference in our kids’ educational goals. Send us a picture and share how you became involved this year at your local school- (email info to: DMedina@Riversideca.gov).

Ward 6 continues to prosper. Streets are being repaved, trees are being trimmed and we continue to experience a reduction in graffiti. We look forward to the Myra Linn neighborhood repaving project to be complete before school starts.  It is currently scheduled to be paved before August 13th. The Walmart remodel on Van Buren is underway and soon we will see the opening of Panera Bread, the Habit Burger and ULTA Cosmetics on Tyler Street in front of Target. We continue to have conversations with the Von’s Broker regarding the empty site. After expressing our disappointment in the façade of the site, Von’s has taken steps towards promising to add an artistic silk wrap to the boarded areas. We look forward to this taking place in the upcoming weeks. On a more positive note, business and sales tax continues to grow within the ward and the entire City. This is good for everyone as it provides funding for essentials services.

Our City Manager John A. Russo proposed to systematically audit all city departments on a rotating basis as part of a program that was approved by the City Council on Tuesday July 28th. The Financial and Performance Audit Program would audit three departments each year, ensuring that each of the city’s 15 departments are audited at least every five years to ensure they are delivering services in the most effective and efficient way. I continue to drive each neighborhood on a weekly basis looking for issues to personally address and problems to solve. This assists me in being proactive, responsive and knowledgeable on issues which affect your quality of life. Being able to provide neighborhoods that are clean, safe and well-maintained continues to be one of my most important goals. Feel free to contact me at any time.

National Senior Citizens’ Day

The City of Riverside is celebrating Senior Citizens’ Day. The Mayor’s Commission on Aging has partnered with several City departments, non-profit organizations and the businesses in the community to bring a day of joy and celebration to the City. The City will celebrate Senior Citizens' Day on August 21. We have many events planned throughout the City for seniors to enjoy- click here to view the Master Calendar of Events.

Events include the Libraries' Computer Classes and assistance with personal electronic devices, social and dining events at the City's Senior Centers, a travel expo, a fitness expo, chocolate bingo, free pet adoptions, museum discounts, informative classes on local history, and a genealogy research class.

Additionally, we have worked with the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce in asking local businesses to offer generous discounts and specials for Seniors that day, with the focus on restaurants and retail stores.

We hope to see Riverside's many Seniors out and about that day, enjoying all our City has to offer!

National Night Out

On August 4th, we hope that your neighborhood participates in National Night Out (NNO). NNO is a community-wide crime prevention program sponsored locally by the Riverside Police Department and many local businesses. The Riverside Police Department once again invites you and your neighbors to be part of NNO this year on August 4th. NNO events are designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that Riverside neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Quiet Zone Update

In mid-July the contractor upgraded the equipment at the Pierce Street and Buchanan Street crossings as well as installing new gates at a pedestrian crossing at the La Sierra Metrolink Station.  These three locations are expected to be completed by now which is in line with the projected August 2015 completion date for these locations.

Once improvements at Buchanan, Pierce, and the La Sierra Metrolink Station are complete, the contractor will begin installing the wiring at the Adams Street, Jackson Street, Gibson Street, Harrison Street, and Tyler Street crossings.  All improvements are still expected to be completed by the end of October 2015.  When all crossings are complete, the City will submit a request to the Federal Railroad Administration for the implementation of a Quiet Zone.

Camp Anza Tenant Info

We are pleased to share that the Home Front at Camp Anza is moving along as scheduled. Once complete, the project will offer affordable homes geared toward veterans in Riverside and will also include the rehabilitation of the historic Officers Club, which will serve as the community center for residents. Home Front at Camp Anza will be a serviced-enriched community tailored to the needs of veterans and their households, with comprehensive support provided both on-site and off-site under the coordination of Wakeland and the project partner, Mercy House Living Centers. The 28 units will be reserved for veteran households earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income. For more information on the project see flyer below or to be added to the Tenant Interest List click here.
