Summer is quickly approaching. Remember as we
enter summer, that we are in the midst of a drought. Conserve water
whenever you can and be mindful of fire danger when you are out hiking, or firing up the barbeque. Also, be sure to maintain a defensible space around
your home, especially if you live in wild land areas like Sunol. I would like to once again congratulate Ms. Kate
Day’s third grade class at Park Elementary School for winning their schools
Golden Sneaker Contest for the most students walking, biking, and carpooling to
class. The Oakland Athletics, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority,
and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) generously donated tickets to Ms. Day’s
class for winning the competition and will enjoy a day out at the ballpark on Thursday,
May 29. Every
day brings about new challenges and new opportunities. While our climate
is changing and extreme weather events become more prevalent (like our drought
conditions), I am encouraged by the young folks taking action to try and change
theirs and our habits. Let’s follow their example and try to reduce our
impact on our ever changing environment. Sincerely,
This month's spotlight we thank Sherman Balch for his life-long service to the community and congratulate Hayward Unified School District on receiving the prestigious Turnaround Arts Grant. Sherman Balch is the founder of Balch Enterprises, Inc. a Hayward based company in building
development, property management and construction of industrial and commercial
projects, and has been licensed for over 50 years building all throughout the
East Bay. He has been a member of numerous local committees and organizations serving
previously as President and Chairman of the St.
Rose Hospital Board of Trustees and Foundation, Chairman of Hayward Area
Recreation and Park District Advisory Committee, Director of California State University, Hayward
Educational Foundation and many more. Sherman has also served as an appointee to many local commissions, serving as a Commissioner on the Oakland-Alameda
County Coliseum Authority, Director of the Alameda County Fair Association, and
an honorary Deputy Sheriff for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department. Sherman has been an integral part in the
development of Hayward by contributing his leadership and support to the enhancement
project at Mission Hills Golf Course and the expansion and renovation of Weekes
Branch Library. At the Board of Supervisor's meeting on Tuesday, May 27, my colleagues joined me in presenting a commendation to Sherman Balch for his years of dedicated service to Alameda County. A big thank you again to Sherman, for his exemplary service to the County!
