As
summer comes to a close, our office has made great strides on our crucial
initiatives around District 2. On August 8, our office hosted a tour aboard the
Niles Canyon Train from Fremont to Sunol, in an effort to view potential trail pathways and open spaces for the establishment of a safe and open walk and bike trail.
The tour was led by the Niles Canyon Railway Association volunteers and
included participants from District One Supervisor Scott Haggerty’s Office, East
Bay Regional Park District, Save Our Sunol, Alameda County Water District,
Alameda County Public Works Department, and the San Francisco Public Utility
Commission, among others. The tour was a
unique opportunity to view the area, as well as having the opportunity to view
the operations of the Niles Canyon Railway. Our office looks to continue the
multi-use trail initiative by surveying the potential areas and concepts, and
looks forward to engaging the community as we develop this concept.

 Our
major project in Hayward, the Tennyson Corridor Initiative, completed its first
phase. In the first phase, our
office received input on the needs of the Tennyson Corridor from the community
and its Executive Committee, which was established to help steer this process.
Based on the input received, from several sectors
and leaders of the Tennyson area, efforts are underway towards a long term
project to plan and implement the construction of a new multi-service center to
replace the current Eden Youth & Family Center building. At this prime
location, within the Tennyson Corridor, this new facility would bring a fresh
face to the area and allow for expansion of crucial services for the community
and maximize the services that currently exist in the corridor.

 With the first
weekend of September dedicated to recognizing hard working individuals and
families, it is important to recognize a summer filled of labor issues. From
the BART work stoppage to the march for fast food workers-- the voice of the
workers was loud and clear this summer. Fair wages, health care benefits and
safe working conditions are essential to a healthy working environment. As an
advocate for working families, I stood in solidarity on the picket lines with
workers at the Oakland Airport and with the fast food workers, as well as toured
union training facilities and continued to support labor initiatives
countywide. Our office supports hard working people who seek to advance their
efforts for better working conditions and decent compensation to keep up with the cost of living in the Bay Area.

 On Saturday, August 17 the
Hayward skyline forever changed. California State University, East Bay’s Warren
Hall came down in seconds as the University imploded the 13-story building,
after being deemed seismically unsound. Located 2,000 feet from the Hayward
Fault, the 1971 building has been empty for the past 2 ½ years.
The implosion became a
spectacle for the East Bay, as many gathered nearby to watch the iconic
building come down. California State University, East Bay plans to construct a
five story building on campus, to accommodate the lost office spaces, as
well as adding a student service and welcoming center.

 The San Francisco
Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) Small Firms Advisory Committee needs your
help!
On
September 12, 2013 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., the SFPUC Small Firms Advisory
Committee will host an outreach workshop for small local contractors who want
to do business with the SFPUC. The workshop will be held at Carpenters’ Union

Small Firm Advisory Committee was formed in 2006 and assists the agency with

 On Saturday, September 28 the 17th Annual
Back to School Shoe Giveaway "Put Your Best Foot Forward" hosted by
First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church in Oakland, will take place at
Oracle Arena and O.co Coliseum in partnership with AEG Facilities.
This annual event provides complimentary
new shoes to low-income students across Alameda County. Over the past 16
years FAME has distributed nearly 8,000 shoes and gift cards to school aged
students returning to school. To apply for a free pair of shoes

Since the need is even greater in 2013, FAME’s
goal is to provide 2,500 students with new shoes throughout Alameda County. For

 "Back
to School" can be a stressful time for many families, especially for parents
who are faced with having to find child care for before and after school hours.
4C's of
Alameda can take some of the stress out of this hectic time. Their experienced
referral counselors are available Monday through Friday to help parents find
child care for children of all ages. They provide referrals to child care centers
and family child care homes- infant/toddler,
preschool, and school-age programs.
Here's
how 4C's child care referral program works:
4C's
child care information and referral services are FREE to all parents looking
for child care in Castro Valley, Fremont, Hayward, Newark, San Leandro, San
Lorenzo or Union City.
Parents can call the referral
counselors directly at (510) 582-2182, visit the office in person or use the form provided on the website
(www.4c-alameda.org) to contact 4C’s.
Phone referral hours are:
- Monday
- Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Thursday -
Friday: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
4C's
referral counselors will ask about your specific child care needs and use their
comprehensive database to find child care programs that match your
request. In most cases, they are able to provide at least three referrals.
4C's counselors can provide information on licensing
regulations and how to screen child care programs. They also have tip sheets, including Choosing Child Care, Paying for Child Care, and What If My Child Has Special Needs?

 A key
component of the Affordable Care Act is quickly approaching, as October 1, 2013
will mark a critical point in health care reform. On October 1, the Health
Insurance Marketplace will open for business, allowing millions of Americans to
compare coverage options for a variety of quality, affordable plans that best
meet their health care needs.
In California, millions will be able to choose
affordable, high-quality health insurance coverage through Covered California. Covered California
will be available October 1st and is a marketplace for individuals
and families to find coverage based on their needs and budgets. Open enrollment
for Covered California will be available starting in October and will begin
coverage on January 1, 2014. For more information on how to get coverage please

 The City
of Newark is hosting their 14th Annual Senior Health & Fitness
Fair on Friday, October 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Newark Community
Center at 35501 Cedar Boulevard.
Free
refreshments and free health screenings are provided, as well as, free flu
shots, cooking demonstration and a senior fitness demonstration. Older adults
will have an opportunity to meet healthcare and senior services providers. Remember to bring your Medicare health
insurance card for verification. For
members of the general public (non-seniors) there is a small entrance fee of
$5.
