Supervisor's Message

d2 letterhead

As summer is officially underway, we would like to wish everyone a happy, memorable and safe Fourth of July holiday! Alameda County Fire Department reminds residents to use caution and be aware of holiday regulations. With the abundance of dry grass and brush, due to the extreme drought conditions, please use extra caution in order to keep our community safe.

For the City of Hayward, Fremont and the unincorporated area of Sunol, please note that ALL fireworks (including the "safe & sane" variety) are banned.

In Union City and Newark, only “safe and sane” or “state approved” fireworks purchased from non-profit firework stands are allowed.

For Union City though, no fireworks are allowed east of Mission Boulevard. Parks in Union City will also close at 7:30 p.m. and use of “safe and sane” fireworks require written approval by the property owners on property other than your own. Complaints made by illegal or misuse of fireworks are subject to violations up to $300 for each occurrence.

Each year, fireworks account for nearly 10,000 emergency room visits and cause more than 30,000 fires in the United States. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is through public displays conducted by professional pyrotechnics hired by communities throughout the Bay Area.

2015 Public Fireworks Displays Around the Bay:

  • Alameda County Fair
  • Berkeley Marina
  • Concord - Mt. Diablo High School
  • Livermore - Downtown
  • Moraga - Moraga Commons Park
  • Mountain View - Shoreline Amphitheater
  • Pleasant Hill - College Park High
  • Richmond - Craneway Pavilion
  • San Francisco - Pier 39
  • San Jose - Municipal Stadium & Discovery Meadow
  • San Mateo - Highlands Elementary School (July 3)
  • San Pablo - El Portal Soccer Field
  • Vallejo – Waterfront

Thank you for doing your part to help keep District 2 safe!
Sincerely,

Supervisor Richard Valle

P.S. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations again to the 2015 NBA Champions, the Golden State Warriors! After 40 years, the trophy has returned to the Bay Area and Alameda County is proud to be Warriors Ground

District 2 Spotlight

CRIL at the A's Game

This month's spotlight we highlight the non-profit organization Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL) in Hayward and their statewide collaborative program Youth Organizing (YO)! Disabled and Proud.

CRIL was organized as a self-help organization in 1979 by a small group of persons with disabilities. The group was committed to improving the range of choices and support for consumers in southern Alameda County. CRIL has worked to keep an independent living model, seeking to bring people together, particularly people with disabilities, with support, advocacy, and skills teaching. Teaching skills in both systems and self-advocacy is even more necessary now for persons with disabilities to work towards enforcement and equality in individual situations, as well as, systemic situations.

CRIL also works with YO! to help connect, organize and educate youth with disabilities. YO! gives youth leadership opportunities, social networks, resources, and more for members. YO! is for youth with disabilities to be proud of who they are and what they can achieve. With support from organizations like CRIL, YO! also connects participates together from around the state.

On Wednesday, May 27 our office donated 18 tickets in a suite to CRIL for an Oakland A’s game. CRIL was able to bring youth together from the statewide collaborative, YO! in order for others to meet each other and share in some baseball fun. A special thank you to the Oakland A’s organization for assisting in ADA accessibility.

Traffic Advisory

BART

BART Transbay train service suspended: August 1 & 2 and September 5-7.

BART will suspend all transbay train service in order to perform critical track maintenance. This means no trains will run through the Transbay Tube on the following dates:

All Day-
Saturday, August 1
Sunday, August 2
Saturday, September 5
Sunday, September 6
Monday, September 7 (Labor Day)

BART plans to have a substantial "bus bridge" available for BART passengers travelling between Oakland and San Francisco during both weekends. The remainder of the BART system will operate under a modified schedule and service plan that will replicate the normal weekend service as closely as possible.

BART must perform necessary maintenance work on a critical section of trackway between the West Oakland BART Station and the Transbay Tube in order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of future Transbay train service. Specifically, this project involves replacing hundreds of wooden rail ties, switches (otherwise called crossovers) and rail, most of which are as old as the system itself and are at the end of their useful life.

For more information regarding BART maintenance or service schedules please visit http://www.bart.gov/.
