This month's spotlight we highlight the non-profit organization Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL) in Hayward and their statewide collaborative program Youth Organizing (YO)! Disabled and Proud.
  
CRIL was organized as a self-help organization in 1979 by a small group of persons with disabilities. The group was committed to improving the range of choices and support for consumers in southern Alameda County. CRIL has worked to keep an independent living model, seeking to bring people together, particularly people with disabilities, with support, advocacy, and skills teaching. Teaching skills in both systems and self-advocacy is even more necessary now for persons with disabilities to work towards enforcement and equality in individual situations, as well as, systemic situations.
  
CRIL also works with YO! to help connect, organize and educate youth with disabilities. YO! gives youth leadership opportunities, social networks, resources, and more for members. YO! is for youth with disabilities to be proud of who they are and what they can achieve. With support from organizations like CRIL, YO! also connects participates together from around the state.
  
On Wednesday, May 27 our office donated 18 tickets in a suite to CRIL for an Oakland A’s game. CRIL was able to bring youth together from the statewide collaborative, YO! in order for others to meet each other and share in some baseball fun. A special thank you to the Oakland A’s organization for assisting in ADA accessibility.

The Family Health Services Fatherhood Initiative and Fathers Corps of Alameda County invites fathers of children ages 2-6 years old to Oakland Children’s Fairyland for a Daddy & Me event.
  
Mothers are welcomed to attend with fathers and children. The event is to encourage fathers to be active and present in their child’s life, while sharing in a free family-friendly event.
  
Come enjoy lots of free activities including a puppet show, rides, animals, and outdoor fun! Food will be provided, and RSVP’s are necessary.

Alameda County Fire Department’s Firefighter Recruit is the entry-level fire suppression, prevention and emergency response position for the Alameda County Fire Department. This classification exists solely for those who are completing their initial Fire Department Training in the Alameda County Fire Department Training Academy.
  
The Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD) provides all-risk emergency services to the unincorporated areas of Alameda County (excluding Fairview), the cities of San Leandro, Dublin, Newark, Union City and Emeryville, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. With 29 fire stations and 35 companies serving a population of 394,000, the ACFD serves densely populated urban areas, waterways, industrialized centers, extensive urban interface, agricultural and wildland regions. Over 400 personnel and 100 Reserve Firefighters provide a wide variety of services to an ever expanding, dynamic and diverse community of roughly 508 square miles.
  
Minimum Qualifications-
Education:

• Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate, such as the General Educational Development Certificate (State of California)

Licenses:

• Valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1 or EMT-FS) Certificate or paramedic license (EMT-P); valid as of the last day for filing of the application. National registry is acceptable.
• Possession of a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate issued within the last twelve months from the last day of filing.
• Possession of a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License

The following are desirable-

• Successful completion of a California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter I course by last day for filing.
• Current experience in the Alameda County Fire Department Reserve program or in a similar program sponsored by a municipal fire agency.

Special Requirements:

1. Minimum 18 years of age.
2. Ability to successfully pass a thorough background investigation, medical examination (NFPA 1582) and psychological examinations.
3. Must be eligible to obtain a Department of Energy security clearance.
4. Those hired as firefighter-paramedics must be able to successfully obtain Alameda County Paramedic accreditation (EMSA Policy 2000).

Note: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Shelter Plus Care (S+C) is accepting applications for homeless individuals and families who meet federal eligibility criteria for the S+C program and who qualify.
  
Applications will be accepted until June 30, 2015.
  
S+C is a permanent supportive housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Rental assistance and support services are provided for homeless individuals who meet the following federal eligibility criteria:

• Resident of Alameda County
• Living on the street or other places unfit for human habitation, in emergency shelter, or in eligible transitional housing with verification that the applicant was living on the street or in shelter prior to entering transitional housing
• Homeless for at least six months out of the last two years
• Disabled by chronic substance abuse, serious mental illness, and/or HIV/AIDS
• Have a household income at or below 50% of Area Median Income (AMI)
• Willing to participate in supportive services

  
Eligible applicants will be added to the S+C Program waitlist. Priority consideration will be made for applicants who provide documentation of extended periods of homelessness. Immediate referrals may also be made for households that qualify for a 2 or 3 bedroom unit.

Celebrate the California Nursery Company 150th Anniversary.
  
In 1865 the California Nursery Company was started in Santa Clara County and moved to Niles in 1884 with John Rock as manager. In 1915, this 50 year old company provided hundreds of fully grown palms and thousands of other trees and plants to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco. The PPIE was showing the world the potential of California as a hub of commerce with the opening of the Panama Canal. George Roeding Sr., became familiar with California Nursery and would purchase it in 1917, growing it to become the largest nursery in the West Coast.

BART Transbay train service suspended: August 1 & 2 and September 5-7.
  
BART will suspend all transbay train service in order to perform critical track maintenance. This means no trains will run through the Transbay Tube on the following dates:

Sunday, September 6 
Monday, September 7 (Labor Day)
  
BART plans to have a substantial "bus bridge" available for BART passengers travelling between Oakland and San Francisco during both weekends. The remainder of the BART system will operate under a modified schedule and service plan that will replicate the normal weekend service as closely as possible.
  
BART must perform necessary maintenance work on a critical section of trackway between the West Oakland BART Station and the Transbay Tube in order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of future Transbay train service. Specifically, this project involves replacing hundreds of wooden rail ties, switches (otherwise called crossovers) and rail, most of which are as old as the system itself and are at the end of their useful life.
