For more than 40 years, those seeking to promote peace and mankind’s stewardship of the only planet we call home have celebrated Earth Day. In 2014 in the Phoenix metro, a slew of events will pursue those same goals.
It is likely that the single biggest gathering over the next two weeks will take place on Earth Day, April 22, as the city of Phoenix celebrates the 44th Anniversary of Earth Day with Keep Phoenix Beautiful at Cesar Chavez Plaza, 205 W. Washington, St., Phoenix, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on April 22.

Saturday, April 12
On April 12, the Earth Day Soccer Classic six-on-six co-recreational tournament is at ASU Intramural Fields, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tempe. Sponsors are the university’s School of Sustainability, Green Living Magazine, Tempe Sister City, Sun Devil Fitness Complex, and One World Futbol. Poems are being accepted for The Glendale Library’s Celebrate the Earth Poetry Contest through April 12, as poets of all ages are invited to submit. In Tempe, April 19 is Zero Waste Day. Tempe residents can reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle books, building supplies, electronic equipment, hazardous household waste, clothes, toys, plastic bags, tires, appliances and school supplies at the Tempe Fire Training Facility, 1340 E. University Drive, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be free, secure, confidential document shredding, free compost given away. For more information call Tempe’s recycle hotline at 480-350-4311.
On the 19th and 20th, Adopt a Highway Earth Day Cleanup, sponsored by the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s Adopt A Highway Program, seeks for all Adopt-A-Highway volunteer groups to go out during Earth Day weekend and clean their designated roads. There will be a tonnage count and bag count for all trash collected during the weekend results will be posted online. For more information phone the Adopt A Highway coordinator at 602-506-4068.

On Saturday, April 26, the city of Peoria and Arizona Clean and Beautiful have partnered to throw Peoria’s Party for the Planet. Volunteers will pick up debris and trash along the New River trail system at Beardsley Road and 83rd Avenue to Deer Valley Road and 75th Avenue. Whoever said science, technology, engineering, and math can't be fun never played with robots. At East Valley Robotics Academy (EVRA) we are "programmed" for fun and you can be too!
