Essay Contest
Kick off your school year with HSLDA's 13th annual essay contest! Offering cash prizes upwards of $200, this contest is open to all homeschooled students ages 7-19 and runs through November 1, 2014. Our themes for this year's contest focus on inventions.
There are 3 age categories. 7-10, 11-14, and 15-19. Each age category has it's own theme.

VFW Scholarship Contest
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) established the Voice of Democracy program in 1947 to provide students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. This year VFW Post 3632 in Tempe is looking for students to enter this year's contest and win some free scholarship money.
The national first-place winner receives a $30,000, paid directly to the recipient's university, college or vocational/technical school. Other prizes range from $1,000-$16,000.
Submission deadline is November 1.

Landry Academy at CHSRC

On November 7th and 8th Landry Academy will have a Biology Intensive Workshop here at Covenant from 9:00am-5:00pm both days. Landry has a "Christ Centered" focus in their courses. Students will perform several dissections, learn their blood type, learn how to prepare college level lab reports and much more!

Phoenix Junior Strings meeting at CHSRC Sept.- Nov. 2014
Junior Strings is a chamber orchestra in Central Phoenix. It focuses on building strength within each musician in a sectional group and chamber orchestra setting. "BOOK-IT" Reading Program
for Kids 5 to 12 years old
CHSRC is participating in the BOOK-IT program from Pizza Hut. In this program children can earn a FREE Personal Pan Pizza when reaching specific reading goals.
If you would like your child to be part of this program, set monthly reading goals for your child; once your child reaches the goal, your child is eligible to earn one certificate per month from October to March.
BOOK-IT Pizza certificates are available at our Resource Center.
If you would like your child to participate, stop by to pick-up a set of certificates. Feel free to pick-up certificates for friends who also wish to participate in this program.

Homeschool Chess Program!
Chess is for Everyone: Day and Night!
Hello, my name is Mr. John Paul Ried and I am a chess coach with the Chess Emporium here in Phoenix, AZ. We have an amazing opportunity for home school students of all grades and ages to learn and develop their chess skills on weekdays from 10AM-11AM and 1PM-2PM weekly.
The art of playing chess combines hundreds of different problem solving, logical reasoning, and mathematical skills. Chess is a splendid way to have a fun learning experience for all of our children involved.
We can provide this training for your home school children during the weekday at extremely competitive rates. Our standard chess training course runs once a week for ten weeks at either of our Chess Training Centers.
Any parent is welcome to come and watch their children learn during our chess sessions, or parents may pick up their students afterwards. Our next ten week training sessions begin Thursday October 2nd 2014 at our Tempe Office, and Monday October 6th at our 32nd/Shea Center. If your child, age 5-13, is interested in learning the art of singing, please join us for this choir. Beginning the 19th of September, this class will teach your child the basics of singing and performing as a choral group in an fun, informal setting. Taught by an Arizona State University, Vocal Performance major, this choir is the perfect opportunity to learn about music. There will be weekly rehearsals culminating in three Christmas performances in December.

EVAC (East Valley Athletes for Christ) will be holding BASKETBALL try-outs for High School and Jr High Boys and Girls in October. Exact dates are not available at this time. Homeschooled students can join one another at our Nature Center to learn about native wildlife with hands-on activities and projects, and up-close encounters with some of our sanctuary animals. Subjects include interesting topics such as: "Wolves, Life Within the Pack," "ZooMusic-Meow, Woof, Yip!" and "Home is Where the Habitat is." Classes are broken up into two groups by age, 5-8 year olds and 9-14 year olds. Get your children wild about wildlife, and sign up for Homeschool Mondays at Southwest Wildlife.
