While here, check out the Museum for your class's next field trip! Fun Spots to Stay Cool

aquatic

Chandler - Hamilton Aquatic Center

Chandler seemingly does everything right, and this massive facility brings the community together.

Kids of all ages go for broke on two twisty waterslides and splash each other with playful water features, while younger ones enjoy their own shallow area, slide/playground structure and zero-entry play pool.

Adults relax in the Current River, vortex whirlpool or on patio furniture under shaded ramadas.

Free swim 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays. Thursdays are Family Night 6-8 p.m., $1 per person. Admission for children 2-17 costs $1, adults $2.25. Find Hamilton Aquatic Center at 3838 S. Arizona Ave., Chandler. 480-782-2630.

Glendale - Foothills Aquatics Center

Cascading waterfalls, spray nozzles, a lazy river, and several serpentine slides draw families and those just looking to cool down at this spectacular recreation and aquatics complex.

The little ones have their own area to frolic, while teenagers will want to climb the two-story slide platform in a separate play pool. Parents relax under thoughtful shade covers and watch all the fun.

Host your own pool party for up to 30 guests that includes admission, exclusive use of the party patio and deck, permission to bring in your own food (can you say birthday cake?) and tables and chairs for your guests.

Open 1-5 p.m. daily. No charge for ages 2 and under. Admission for ages 3-17 costs $2.50; adults $5. Foothills Aquatics Center is located at 5600 W. Union Hills Drive, Glendale. 623-930-4600.

Apache Junction - Superstition Shadows Aquatic Center

There appears to be something for everyone at this 62,000-square-foot facility: a zero-depth entry play pool, two slides, a vortex whirlpool, four water features like spouts and buckets, a six-lane competitive pool with two diving boards, and a concession and grassy area.

The season at this center is shorter than some of the others, as they wind down "before school starts back up," says Larry Binion of Apache Junction Parks and Recreation.

Admission for children 17 and under costs $1, adults $2. The aquatic center is open noon to 6 p.m. daily and is located at 1091 W. Southern Ave. in Apache Junction. 480-474-5210.

Scottsdale - Eldorado Aquatic Center

This place rocks. It feels more like a Lifetime Fitness facility with its gleaming public spaces and energetic vibe.

The Aquatic and Fitness Center anchors the larger, 60-acre Eldorado Park with its two lakes, skate park and ballfields. You and the kids could spend the whole day here.

There's a 13-lane lap pool, two exciting waterslides (one enclosed), a zero-entry splash zone and playground for younger kids, four diving boards, resort-style lounge chairs and grassy areas, lots of umbrellas and canopies, and a public-art component titled "A Floating World" by Sylvia Tidwell and Calvin Abe with blue-wave elements and curvy concrete benches.

Admission for kids is $1, adults $2. Eldorado Aquatic Center is at 2301 N. Miller Road, Scottsdale. 480-312-2484.

blue line

Mesa - Rhodes Aquatic Complex

Are we in Malibu or Mesa? There are kids riding waves on the Double FlowRider wave machine at this watery wonderland. Kids and parents flash smiles at the large splash pad with tumble buckets and beachlike entry, and later picnic under the bright blue canopies.

But it's not all fun and games here; there's some serious swimming going on as Rhodes also features two 1-meter diving boards, a 3-meter diving board and eight 25-yard lap lanes.

Nearby Skyline Aquatic Center may garner headlines for its professional swimming events, but Rhodes keeps everyone happy.

Admission for children under 17 costs $2, adults $4. The complex is located at 1860 S. Longmore, Mesa, 480-644-2550.

blue line

Buckeye - Buckeye Aquatic Center

A towering three-tiered 160-foot circular waterslide, two cascading water features, a zero-entry section and four diving boards varying from 3 to 10 feet tall welcome swimmers of all ages at this hub of summertime activity in the far West Valley.

Open swim hours are noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at a cost of $2 per person. Also swim 7-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, May 25 through Aug. 26.

Teen Splash Nights also are scheduled one Friday a month throughout the summer - June 26, July 24 and Aug. 14 - and are free of charge and include a hot dog and fruit punch.

Buckeye Aquatic Center is located at 207 N. Ninth St., Buckeye, 623-349-6690.

Tempe - Kiwanis Wave Pool

Stay shielded from the sun and catch a wave at the Valley's only indoor wave pool. Grab a raft or inner tube and ride 3-foot waves that arrive in eight different variations. The towering indoor space also houses a 16-foot-tall, 122-foot-long double spiral waterslide.

Tempe keeps the water temperature around 85 degrees year-round, and lifeguards keep an eye on all the action.

The wave pool is open 1-5 p.m. daily. Admission for swimmers 2 to 12 years old costs $5; for those 13 and older it's $7. Show patriotic spirit Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, and wear red, white and blue and save 50 percent off admission.

Find the Kiwanis Wave Pool inside Kiwanis Recreation Center, 6111 S. All America Way, Tempe. 480-350-5201.
